Jakob opened with something like 54s for the first 400m in the rain and wind in sandnes in the national championship. He faded pretty badly later in the race though.
Keen to see which pacemakers/pace they have in store for the Men’s 1500m. Monaco is always super fast. Hopefully they have the pace set for a sub 3:27 and see who can hang on.
I don't think anyone has ever gone out sub-1:50 since El G. Kiprop's 3:26 went through in 1:50-high (he was probably 1:51+) and I think it screwed him over a bit (although he likely would've come up short regardless). Would really really like to see the pacer hit 800 in 1:49.5 and the field come through in 1:49-high to 1:50. Jakob and Yared can certainly hang with that, and Tim always seems game to try. I think that's the best shot they have at a 3:25 time - it seems nearly impossible to imagine them coming through in 1:51 and closing in 1:47-1:48 for a record.
I have posted a few times that my opinion is if Jakob wants to break the WR in the 1500m he simply has to be in the 1.49.7/8 at 800m and right at 2.45.1/2 through 1200m. In no world are we seeing a 2.46.anything and then sub 40 from him a-la El Guerrouj.
The problem I think we will have - at least for Monaco at this point in the season, is that we haven't even seen Jakob attempt under 1.51.0 yet - let alone under 1.50.0. Last year in Oslo he was 1.51.8 and Silesia 1.51.6. Knowing how measured he is in his approach to everything I think it's more likely we see him attempt something in the mid to high 1.50's first before he attempts to rifle through 800m almost 2 seconds faster than he ever has before.
I think we will see the top of the yellow band set at 1.50.5 and we will see Jakob hovering just off that pace looking to be right at or just under 1.51.0 and hoping to hit 1200m right at or just under 2.46.0
I'll check with the technical sources later in the week for the exact intel...
Some big races right before the Olympics. This meeting in Monaco has some bangers on both the track and in the field. Here's some of the top entries I saw. World record potential here, just like last weekend. A link to the full entries is at the bottom of my post.
Women's Pole Vault - We have the top 2 vaulters in the world this year competing. Katie Moon and Molly Caudery. If you look at the list of top vaults this year, we also have 4th, 5th, 7th, and 9th competing here. Should be a great competition and give us a good picture at where these top women are at before Paris.
Women's Javelin - Like pole vault, we will see the top 2 javelin throwers matchup with Flor Ruiz Hurtado and Victoria Hudson. The 4th and 5th best throwers this season will also be here. This event should be fire.
Men's 400 Hurdles - big matchup...we have Karsten Warholm who we last saw won the Euro Championships last month with a 46.9. And we have Alison Dos Santos, coming off his win in the Paris Diamond league last weekend. Also #4 Caleb Dean and #7 CJ Allen will be here.
Men's 800m - In case you guys were left wanting more after last weekend's insane 800m in Paris, we have Sedjati, Wanyonyi, and Tual facing off again. Except this time, Marco Arop has entered the chat. I don't know if they will run faster than last week but this race will be fireworks.
Men's High Jump - The top 3 jumpers in the world will be here as well as an additional 5 guys ranked in the top 14. The only major player missing is Barshim. This will be an excellent preview of the upcoming olympics.
Men's 400m - Quincy Hall and Michael Norman, both on the US team. World #1 Chris Morales-Williams and #3 Bayapo Ndori also here. Should be a pretty solid 400m with fast times.
Women's 2000m - Possible world record here. The WR stands at 5:21 from Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi back in 2021 (she was an 800m runner btw). Jessica Hull is in this race and coming off her 3:50 1500m last weekend. This record will not be easy as we don't have Faith Kipyegon playing rabbit.
Men's 110m Hurdles - Grant Holloway ran 12.86 at the US trials a couple of weeks ago. His PB is 12.81 and the WR is 12.80. It's an olympic year and he's in phenomenal shape. You never when the WR will fall. Also in the race are the world #4 and #5 top hurdlers this year and also the reigning olympic champ Hansle Parchment.
Men's 200m - Noah Lyles
Men's 1500m - holy cow. Jakob Ingebrigsten, Yared Nuguse, Timothy Cheruiyot, Narve Nordas, Niels Laros. I don't expect Laros to win but I do find it interesting that he's 19 years old at the moment, ran 1:44 800 last season and has run 3:31.2 this season. What a talent.
I do think the fields will change a bit. It sounds like Wanyonyi will be out of the 800 and Hoppel will be. The 800m field is small and could likely take another couple. 1500 is similar and I hope we add in Reynold, and maybe a surprise American (Hocker?).
I think he's smart to try it that way. Benjamin hasn't faced Warholm prior to the global championship since 2019
I think it’s smart. When he races domestically, he doesn’t go out hard because he doesn’t need to. To beat Warholm and Dos Santos he can’t bank on them coming back to him and running 46-low or 46-mid. They could hang on for a sub-46.

A lot of top Americans seem to be ducking this one.
Well, except for Nuguse. Any word on the UK contingent? Wightman, Kerr, gourley, Fogg dogg? I know Giles will be there.
Gourley is on the 1500 start list. Wightman is probably recovering from or being careful with the injury that kept him out of the UK championships. Kerr probably just doesn’t consider it part of his season’s plan, and/or maybe he’ll be getting a nice appearance fee in London on July 20. Fogg’s CV is not good enough to get him into the meet.

Duck Duck Kerr will for sure run no races before the olympics.
He ran 3:27.14 last year on July 15th…he ran 3:43.73 and 4:43.13 in early to mid september…I don’t doubt his ability to sustain high peaks.
He lost to Kerr at WC in the 1500. Just sayin'
I don't think anyone seriously thinks Jakob lost because he peaked too early. Jakob fans say he was sick, Jakob doubters don't think he was ever fit enough to win by leading wire to wire.

In a race where falls are being predicted by some, surely you should be glad that "the tank" won't be ploughing through the field like he ploughed through Giles at trials?
Noah vs Tebogo could be special. Noah might have to go 19.4 to win if last years London meet is any indication. Tebogo just ran 9.99 for second behind Kishane. Lindsey in it too but might've mistimed his peak this season.
Tebogo also split 43 twice during the world relays champs, didn't even look like he was pushing it either. He has the strength and the speed to get down to 19.4 or faster. It will be an interesting race. Noah should be on his A game for this one.
