Graham's coach and program were looking out for him and helped him get to the Olympics. Parker's, not so much. Sad for Parker, very happy for Graham.
I'm confused. Please help me understand this as I'm new here and don't post very much.
A few weeks ago, everyone on here had determined that Gibby was an idiot who trained all of the guys too hard with six minute flat easy days and got them injured. Now he's a genius?
And Milt is a moron even though Wolfe handily beat Blanks at both NCAAs and USAs?
Which is it? Or is this board just full of jealous coaches who think everyone sucks as they are envious that they'll never get to coach people so talented?
The reality is Milt and Gibby are both great coaches and Blanks and Wolfe are both great runners. There also are a TON of coaches who are almost as good but you'll never hear about. Look at how good Jess Hull's dad is for example.
Not prioritizing getting Parker into a race where he could get the auto qualifier or ensuring he could get the points necessary to meet the necessary ranking before Olympic Trials (by doing some pro races, e.g.) did not put him in a good spot to make the Olympics. Compare with Maia Ramsden's racing schedule. Naturally, they are both good coaches. It's about the priorities.

There aren’t all these supposed outdoor 5,000m races to run fast in the US as much as people seem to think. That’s why everyone tries to get it at BU. Comparing to a 1500 runner is unfair. The lack of quota allocation is the culprit here, not Milt being a good coach or Parker just not having his best day in the race Blanks Qed in.

If last December Parker Wolfe and his coach said "we're going to focus our season on scoring enough points to qualify for the Olympics," everyone on here would have laughed their a** off. He'd be made fun of for thinking he had a sliver of a chance too get top 3 versus Fisher, Kincaid, Teare, Klecker, Young, Nur, McGorty, Chelimo, Hocker, plus Blanks.
Now all the pretend I Told You So folks come out of the woodwork to cluck cluck.
Hindsight is 20/20. We're only having this conversation because the kid has had an unbelievably fantastic year. Nobody would have predicted in December he'd be contending for top 3 at the trials. Unfortunately the World Athletic system is not setup to let such people qualify.
I do remember hearing an interview with Parker and he stated that he and coaches were going all in after the NCAAs and thinking to my self that they are going to need to win the Olympic Trials because he didn’t have the standard or the World Ranking. There is a reason the Harvard guys were excited after the trials. They knew that Graham had a real shot after placing 4th behind Wolfe. I am surprised the UNC coaches didn’t have the foresight in this case. I do feel for Parker. He’s a good kid and hopefully bounces back and has a great senior year. I think Graham is a true strength guy and can really hurt some people. Parker has an incredible kick. These two along with Nico are the future of USA distance running.
Going all the way back to December, Graham targeted the standard and got it. Parker had that opportunity and wasn’t good enough. End of story. His lack of ability to hit the standard is what cost Parker, not some injustice.

I think of Parker Valby the same. She’s not good enough in the 10,000m. Gave the standard a shot and fell short yet she gets to go.
I am really happy for Blanks and think he is fully worthy of his spot in Paris. He has crazy upside and obviously did a better job of making sure he qualified than Wolfe. Hopefully Wolfe gets a Diamond League invite this summer. He deserves it, and this controversy should keep the fans entertained.
Yes, great to have such a young, inexperienced team to build on for the future with Fisher leading the way for the younger talent.
One guy ran fast early, got injured and came back. Another guy came on late but not far enough. Both work within the same system.
What I fimd interesting is the transfer of chasing times from after the trials to before the trials. Seems like athletes have to hold a high level for quite some time. However, it's been a while now where all the top XC guys have gone from ncaa xc right into a December indoor 5k to get their natty qualifier then go into a recovery and huge training block with more focus on Trials efforts in an Olympic year. When things work out, they look like geniuses. When they don't, everyone becomes a critic. Again, 2 guys at a different time in their experiences but still have to play by the same rules.
Don't worry, the standard will continue to get tougher and we'll have this issue for as long.
What people don't realize is that to qualify for the Olympics it is NOT top 3 at the USATF track and field trias. Its TOP 3 WITH THE STANDARD. Parker only completed half of what was needed. There isn't really anything to debate here. If USATF only let those into the Trials that had the Olympic Standard, Parker wouldn't have even competed for a spot. Maybe something worth doing in the future so morons don't come onto Letsrun to complain of injustice (I half kid).

Whittni Morgan didn't have either and she's going.
Finishing Top 3 and having the standard should be the ticket to go. World rankings are subjective.

You had me until you mentioned Jess Hull's dad...I think anyone not viewing that performance with an insane degree of suspicion is frankly either stupid or racist. If Jess Hull's dad is good at anything it's chemistry, not coaching.
