i agree about the baby fascist mentality here. the NBA has both lebron and his fairly mediocre kid. they both pull paychecks. this is like a parallel idea to the guy who thought only oly std folks should compete at trials. ok then every 4 years nationals is like 8 people in 100H but 3 in the women's 5k and no one in the javelin, so to speak. which would diminish the watchability and tension of the thing, as it would become like a NCAA last chance meet.
i think some of this discussion reflects a naive idea of how professionalized our sport is. lyles and some others do well -- but not lebron money. they might make what rank and file NFL players do. a lot of our athletes probably make what we do, but as sportspeople. some are probably broke, doing side jobs or a day job, and just training seriously. it's not fully professionalized. we're not as bad as some olympic sports but if getting rich is the standard for staying pro the sport would empty out.
last point, you have lost all sense of relative standing and comparison. another way of looking at boling's world champs experience and world record is our bench would make podia in other countries. boling's 9th place time would be #2 at UK nationals. he'd be a top few open quarter guy there. he'd have a chance at their mile relay. ditto most of the world. and he has squeezed the indoor experience out of our darwinian system.
