Great decision by Parker/coaches. She’s young yet I’m not sure she’s ready for the double of these events yet.
Why isn't she ready to double? She handled the double fine at the trials.
She won't be a factor in either race. Might as well have done both.
Maybe she noticed that nearly every top female American distance runner is either injured, or coming back from injury, and wants to make it out of Paris in one piece. She’s already logged a ton of miles on the track this season.
How can Morgan go if she doesn't have the Olympic standard?
It’s common knowledge that there are two ways to qualify. Either get the standard or be high enough in WA ranking. See Road to Paris site for all the rankings.
Still no word on whether Schweizer made it in the 10000…
If she did, I wonder if she will drop one?
If Parker made it in then Schweizer did as well. They were both up there in the rankings
Schweizer's in. I feel like the Bowerman babes never drop one and just end up doing middlin in both. Props to Elise for at least running the events she actually wants to run now, since leaving Bowerman.
The world rankings make the alternate spot more interesting. If Karissa doesn't want the spot in the 10,000, it goes to Jessica Mclain. But if she's not qualified within rankings, I guess it would go to Amanda Vestri, who's next and is ranked higher.

Izzo with the cross-country standard would not be considered?

If the cutoff for world rankings is right before Amanda Vestri (right now she's just after Valby and Schweizer), then yeah, it would be our XC star Izzo!
On the current world rankings Whitni is far behind Parker and several other Americans, and doesn't come close to the Olympic standard. I'm not saying she isn't the best choice (as 5th finisher in the 5K), just that the USATF needs to precisely explain the rationale for her selection and the weights given to the world ranking, making the standard, and placement in the trials. Runners and their coaches need to completely understand this so they can intelligently plan their Olympic preparation in the future. (Likewise they need to explain for the record the selection of Parker Valby in the 10K, not having the standard and on the bubble in the rankings.) This process should be a product of arithmetic, not subjective valuation by unknown persons at USATF.

Why did you single out Valby, when she’s ahead of Schweizer in the world ranking AND beat her in the trials? At the end of the day, they are both well within the ranking quota.
Good heavens. USATF's process is very simple: you take the placings from the trials, and then take the first three from those placings that are qualified (either with the standard or in the quota). So if 1, 2, and 3 from the trials all have the standard, they're going. If one of them scratches, does 4 have the standard or ranking? If so, they're going. If they scratch (as is the case with Valby in the 5,000m) then you go to number 5 (Morgan), and if that person has the standard or rank (and Morgan has the ranking) they go. It's not a mystery. There's nothing for USATF to explain. If Morgan hadn't had the ranking, then you look at 6th place (Buchalski) and keep going until the team is full. Same with the 10k - Katie Izzo doesn't jump in line because she had the standard! They would literally keep looking down the placing at USAs until they hit the next person in the rankings. The order from USAs determines who with the standard or ranking gets to go.
Valby would be better off doing the double because she won't be competitive in either 5 or 10 this time out with world elites running 14:00/28:50s, but doing the double is a mark of distinction.
