Also Myers ran his PB a full year ago despite many opportunities to better it over the last 12 months. He can't be expected to be selected when he's stuck in the 3.33+ bracket and has an 0-2 record against Stewy.
Mcsweyn has two 3.31 results in the qualifying period which is more than can be said for anyone else either in the team or who was vying for a spot. He finished 7th in the last olympics (which should be considered 6th due the banned scum bag katir finishing in front of him). And he was a finalist the following year in the world champs when the likes of Hoare got eliminated in the preliminaries. It was only in last year's world champs where he underperformed. He absolutely deserves his spot.
Nobody would care about this if Myers were an unheralded 24 year old who had posted the same results. 8th at LAGP (behind Jesse Hunt)? 6th in Bydgoszcz, 1.5 seconds behind some guy named Stefan Nillessen? Most importantly, he was 5th in the Australian championships behind the 3 guys who were selected ahead of him (and Jesse Hunt).
Cameron Myers is an amazing talent, but the only reason he would warrant selection over those others is because he’s a prodigy with an exciting future. He’s 0-2 against McSweyn this year, and McSweyn ran multiple 3:31s last year. Spencer freaking won the Aussie championship and ran 3:31 last year. Hoare is an easy #1 pick. And to all those saying that McSweyn won’t make the final - do you really think Myers would be a wise bet to make the final? No way 3 Aussies are making the final no matter how you slice it.
No better advertisement for a trials style system as they have in the USA. There a dramas, but at least it's clear cut. In MOST of the USA longer races the worthy prevailed. Obviously there will be no pleasing everyone but surely the mudslinging and doubt are counterproductive.
Hi Thoughtsleader. I can understand Spencer being chosen above him, but McSweyn is clearly done at 1500m. Giving Cameron Myers a place in the team would give him invaluable experience for the next Olympic Games, when he will be 22 and which will likely be the best chance Australia have had of winning gold since Herb Elliott.
You also have to think about the marketing of this sport, which is still in intensive care. Myers is a potential superstar. Sending him to the Olympics would raise his profile, the profile of Australian athletics, and the sport in general.
I'll be surprised if McSweyn makes the final, and if he does, we all know that he'll just act as Jakob's pacemaker and hand him the gold ahead of Kerr. Hmmm...maybe that is the Ozzie thinking.
Wasnt me. I think Stewie is marginally better-positioned to do well, but I’d pick Myers because Stewie can do the 5,000.

+1 He also is 2-0 vs Myers this year
The MTC hate on here is atrocious. Stewy absolutely deserves his spot.

So stewie dfl at diamond league being spat out the back and Spencer dfl at his last meet being spat out the back in 3:38 more deserving righto. neither of these 2 have shown more form than Cam. really bad decision. smacks of bideau bias!
Strongly agree. Cam has run 3:33 twice this season and a 3:34. Spencer’s best this season is a 3:37 and McSweyn a 3:35.

Seems like Cam Myers has a world championship of his own to conquer first - World U20 is at the end of August. Well look at Jakob - except that he didn't make an Olympic team at that age (16 for him in 2016), and all he would have competed against for a spot were his brothers (Henrik was often injured by then anyway, so just Filip really). He did compete at World U20 however.
As stated - Cam was 5th at the Aussie trials/Championships, so hardly three past the post as in the USA style.
Phoebe Gill is a similar age, but she won the British trials, even with Hodgkinson getting a bye and am not convinced that her running at OG is better for her development than winning at World U20. Time will tell, but with the young women (MU and Keely H) earning OG medals at U20 age, recent history is on her side - although neither Mu or Keely have improved significantly is the past 3 years as it is - Mu in part because she has rarely raced. Whereas Jakob is the only one (an extreme outlier) even close amongst the men recently. Laros ran very well last year, but has been mostly absent this year. But then I don't agree with Quincy Wilson being on the US team (even if it is a relay) if it means not doing World U20 - again time will tell. If he flames out by 2028, then we can look back at this as premature.

Katir wasn´t in the 2021 OG 1500m final
You're right, apologies. I was thinking of the world champs 2022.
Why doesn’t Australia come up with a meet to determine who should go? They could call it the Olympic Trials.
I would love this. Trials for the marathon ~ 6 months out. Track gets a new trials closer to the Olympics.
The good thing about USA trials is that they are held close to the Games, so they can all peak at a good time and then sharpen up for another few weeks. Our summer Nationals is just too early for this. Would a trials held in Australia's winter work? Athletes could go to Europe DLs and come back early.
All the hate on here is simply because we are fans who are sick of this and feeling jaded. This decision might be the right one but we're sceptical of the process because of past BS. Even now, rumours around that other athletes were told they couldn't double, but Stewy gets to do 5k/1500? I'm tired of the playing field not being level.

That's where I am as well. This is hardly a disgraceful decision. Spencer won the Aussie champs and has the standard. If the national champs is going to mean anything, it should at least guarantee olympic selection. Has Myers beat any of these guys H2H this year?
But yes, Stewie should just contest the 5k. The 1500 has moved on from him, he probably won't make the final. Neither will Myers, but the experience would be priceless for him in 2028

No he hasn't, 0-2 vs Stewie, 0-3 vs Hoare and 0-1 vs Spencer this year
I kind of understand the argument of Stewie just contesting the 5k, but I also don't think he should be forced to do so if he wants to double
Got to be kidding. the heats of Olympics will be a doodle and then a kick and Stewie has none. he was woeful at worlds last year. Best days are behind him.
U20s should be legit fun. Kenya is sending a strong two, and theoretically Mehary could run though he’d probably do the 3/5,000 instead. But Myers should be favored and it’s a great accomplishment if he gets U20 gold.
