Cooper Teare can make 5k teams, but he needs to focus on the 5k. And he needs to be fresh without 1500m rounds. It's kind of astounding he wants to be a 1500m runner so bad, he's left making a team on the table the last 2 years.
He is 24 so he has one more shot at the Olympics in 2028. Between now and then I would suggest major changes to get the ship corrected. Move to Park City and train with Grant (the best 5k and 10k runner in the US).
Teare is really a one event (5000m) guy. He can drop to 3k and run very well, but in terms of championships in the US, he can only hope to do something at 5K.
Dabbling in the 1500m is a mistake. This requires energy that he will need.
12:54.75 is truly great. I hope he realizes where his talent lies.
It's not that he can't race, it's that he completely bonked. Getting boxed in or being too far from the leaders is poor racing, but he was nowhere to be found that last 2k.
I don't know Teare gets a thread though, basically everyone from 8th place and up ran like sh!t. I don't watch the race, did something happen?
Really hard to watch him in that 5k tonight. Look I know he won that 1500m US final years ago but other than that, the guy just isn't a racer! He can run really really fast, but when it comes to the biggest moments, he's just not like his training partner Cole Hocker!
Steeple option - additional talent needed over just being fast, greater injury risk & he left a team with Jager.

He made one team 2 years ago and has been chasing the high ever since. I guess nobody broke it to him that that field he won in was extremely weak (No Hocker or Centro, Nuguse and Wynne were not at their best) and was not a true reflection of his abilities.

It would be interesting to know what his mileage is. Grant seems to be implementing a lot of what worked for him with BTC, and topping out at 90 mpw. If Teare left BTC not liking the switch to the volume, he couldn’t hang with Grant. Again, Teare never fully committed to BTC, immature decision. How do you join a team, after floundering in Eugene after leaving school, and not fully commit?

He still had NCAA eligibility at Eugene with national records.
He joined the team when it was moving to Eugene there was massive discontent.
The coach was pushing him into the 5k & he wasn't happy about that & not racing. These are not signs of immaturity.
Both McArthur & Teare expend too much energy being social media "influencers". Coop needs to focus/soul search & realize those efforts are draining him & making him cocky. Move up to 5k & nose to the grindstone. You dont see serious, successful guys like Grant Fisher wasting energy on crap that doesn't matter like gaining "followers".
The only way to really get money in this sport unless you are number 1 in the world is by doing social media. Josh kerr does it all the time.

Oh please. You don't get tired from posting on social media.
I think Cooper needs to start training differently to be a factor outside of time trials. He needs to do more workouts to train is body how to shuttle lactate acid and run with some fatigue in the legs. Great way to do that is running the recovery portion of workouts (not at a slow pace). He can slow down a bit on the paces when going fast. Cooper does great with even pacing but he needs to work on his ability to tolerate lactate acid and continue running fast. 0.02.
She hasn't made him slower tho. he ran 12:54 this year. he just can't race

It was like 81° and felt hotter in the sun so I'll attribute it to the heat. But that's no excuse, everyone had the same conditions. When you're a 12:54 guy who was 4th last trials there are going to be higher expectations and to be honest it seemed like Teare just sailed it in after he got dropped

Asking Coop to run 5 tough races in summer heat is a lot to ask. As others have mentioned many of the 5k guys at Trials only did that event. Was the 5/10 double 2024 Trials actually easier than the 1500/5k double?
Other than Grant Fisher, what other doubler ran well at the 5,000 Trials race?
Coop should not shy away from the 1500 on the American circuit, but at Trials and national champs he needs to just stick with the 5,000.
Heat may factor in as well. You remember Tallahassee.

Craig Engles talent level?
Nope. He and Hocker went pro, didn’t move out of Eugene. They were hanging out with the New Gen groupies making cringy sad videos training around Eugene. Then Teare thought he was making the “adult” move by joining BTC and leaving Hocker. I remember an interview he gave after an indoor race where he said that he could leave the team, after only being with them for a few months. It was evident that he was not staying and when things went badly, he left. How different is this summer from last summer for him?

Cooper had been making New Gen videos for years, that you and I would find cringe but thousands of younger fan loved.
He and Hocker were not floundering in Eugene,as you said. In fact Teare announced his decision to leave school to go pro with BTC in Dec 2021 and was racing in their kit one month later. Still making videos.
It is completely reasonable for him to express his interest in leaving after just a couple of months as top athletes were leaving and threatening to leave because things were so bad.
This summer to last - maybe a 12:54 counts for something!
was there any indication prior that teare would make the 1500 team?
maybe, but not from here.
if you are not firing on all cylinders don't double.
which is obvious to all but teare.
or did we miss some kind of workout that indicated 330? 1500 with a 52 second close?
probably not.
anyway, in 5-10k champs, a good 2/3 of the field ends up running much worse than normal, in the marathon it's even worse. that is 0G, other marathons if your prep isnt right you drop out..
