UK athletics shooting itself in the d!ck making that agreement with Kerr to have him run the 800 at trials. any country with that auto select policy and a chance of gold should maximize its advantage, not negate it.
It wasn’t an agreement with Kerr. It was the section criterion for everyone. Get a world medal in 2023 and have the qualifier and you just need to run to prove your fitness. Same as Hudson smith or Johnson. You make it sound like Kerr made some special arrangement.
"and you just need to run to prove your fitness."
Full stop. Right there. Exactly the point that needs to be made. Who in god's name would consider a current year world champion, that has defeated Jakob and set a world record not fit for selection regardless of what they run in their off event.
If Kerr ends up injured, their demand to have celebrity attendance at the trials will work against their desire to medal at the olympics.
And you are correct there is no public disclosure of an agreement, and Kerr will maintain he was following his 2023 build up strategy, but in interviews in the past few months he has alluded quite directly to the negotiations between his camp and the selectors. which also involved world champs participation.
Kerr’s first 400 was 52.8, so I’m not sure what this 49 business is. Some of these assessments of the race are comically Kerr-centric. Giles definitely drifted a bit, Kerr definitely didn’t try to ole him to the left, or tiptoe to the right. I think we saw indoors with Barega he doesn’t really do subtle moves to get by you, he just tries to manhandle you if you’re in his way. This time it backfired because if he got skinny or made a move to Giles’ left he could’ve made far less contact instead of what happened. Even the little shove (somewhat dirty) like Katir did to Tim in Eugene could’ve worked.

Kerr did push him, which caused Giles to fall, which then caused Kerr to fall. It was Kerrs fault.

It’s pretty interesting to read different views of how this went without seeing it.
It makes me think how people could be wrongly convicted or even wrongfully acquitted on eye witness testimony when a group of track fans can’t agree on what caused a runner to fall.
I conclude it was bad luck. The 800 is a dicey race.
Years ago I had the opportunity to work on an aircraft accident board and learned very quickly that eye witnesses are notoriously unreliable. We see that same thing in these threads about contact between runners.

You are right I didn’t word that correctly
‘you need to run at the trials to prove your fitness’
that was the selection criteria
or get a medical exemption. ‘Wightman got the medical exemption..which means he can be considered..although he has no guarantee of a place. In fact. There is no place in the 1500 so they can only consider him for the 800
Terrible tactics by Kerr trying to force open a spot that wasn't there. Jakob is gonna eat this lil scotty boy for lunch!!
Also terrible tactics from Giles. He used too much energy putting in a surge around the bend to get past Kerr, whom he was in a battle with 200m before the finish. He needs to learn to conserve his energy better. Then of course he stopped like a train in the finishing straight and impeded other runners, not just Kerr but also the third placed man. Giles needs to learn to keep his energy for the finishing straight, not a final bend burn up to get into the lead and then fade.

It looked like Kerr's right leg hit Giles' left leg from behind, causing Giles to fall first.

Yes. I hope they select Wightman for that last 800m spot (as long as injury is just mild calf strain). I don’t think Giles is good enough. He’s always messing up races.

Just watched the video. Giles had one of the most obvious cases of cutting across the track to prevent someone from passing that I’ve seen. Not sure what the debate is about
Lol. Kerr ran that as if Giles owed him an open lane.
Isolate Giles feet, he moves from the far right of lane 1 to the far left of lane 1 in RESPONSE to Kerr's step inside, meaning it was already too late to move and he caused the collision.
He absolutely had the right to slam the rail lane shut on Kerr, but off the corner, not in the middle of the straight. you cant have your cake and eat it too forcing wide runners and cutting off the inside.
it was open until Kerr put himself in there and Giles moved late because of hypoxic race-brain.

Giles is in the middle of lane one when Kerr makes contact. He only lands in the inside of lane one once Kerr had clipped his foot knocking him down.
Giles drifts to the outer 1/4 of the lane coming off the turn then back to the middle when he feels Kerr trying to pass. Kerr was hoping to get lucky, but he never had room to make that pass on the rail.
