athing is great but if you think she has a chance against sydney in a 400 you are delusional
What are you talking about? Athing ran a half second faster in the 400 as a college freshman than Sydney did. And Bobby Kersee is so afraid of Athing being a competitor of Sydney in the 400 that he won't let Athing run that event.
So of course Athing has a shot at competing with Sydney in the 400, which she will be doing starting next year when Athing ditches Bobby Kersee and goes to a coach that allows her to run the 400.
That's not really a fair comparison. Athing ran 6 400 races and specialized in the 400 that year running it at NCAA's where as Sydney ran just a 400 opener and focused on the 400H.
Bobby Kersee loves world records. If he or Athing felt they could go after the 400 WR right now, they would be doing that. She was even going to run a 400 at LAGP until her hamstring injury hit so he's not stopping her from the event. Maybe she wants to focus on the 800 right now.

Agreed. As much hate as Kersee gets... Most of the time you can only do so much as a coach. I honestly just don't think Athing Mu is dedicated enough and has gotten by (after college) only mostly talent. THAT is why people criticize her so much as it truly seems she cares more modeling, etc. then track. Which is how she became a house hold name in the first place (through track) and doesn't seem to give anything back to the sport.
My critical assessment of Athing Mu is that she is an amazing talent who runs fast but races poorly. The 400m, whether an open race in lanes or a 4x4 leg, involves a lot less contact and strategy than the 800, so it's easy to see why people would be talking about her running that distance. Maybeshe would have fallen the other day even if she raced 800m more often, but it's certainly fair to speculate that not running in a crowd very often caught up to her. Learn how to win races even when you get spiked, boxed-in and jostled. Clearly it's just as important as running fast.
Very few athletes have the physical talent to be a legitimate WR threat without being all-in mentally as well. I don't know for certain what her level of commitment to running is, but it sure would be a shame if she doesn't put it all together to go after the 800 WR. It's time for that record to fall.

Kersee is a hero. Coaching an athlete who doesn't care (Athing) is awful. Athing ran 2:10 when she was 13 (or 12) years old. NBC vignette had something about Kersee trying to get her to love the event. Good luck.
Its crazy how much mu got trashed on here for not racing. Then she falls during her race and there are threads calling for a re run, to put her on the team anyways, to give olympic gold a free pass, to let usa kick third off the team, to now giving her a chance to do a run off to run on a 4x4 or open 400m.
She could have entered the 400m for the chance she falls in the 800m, she could have raced more for practice, she could have done so many things she didnt do.
Mu didnt even look great in the prelims. She isnt gonna save usa mid distance running like many of you hoped. Its time to move on. She isnt running in 2024 and probably wont in 2028. And its her fault.
