I honestly can’t see anyone making that b*tch move. They’d be screwing over Team USA, not just Valby or Nike. She’s already on record saying she probably won’t be able to double.
The 1500 prelims are 13 hours after the 5K final. She said herself that she probably won’t double, but she hasn’t made a final decision. If she drops the 5K, she or her sponsor don’t get to pick the replacement. Furthermore, Valby hasn’t even signed a pro contract yet, and may be listening to multiple suitors.
Wouldn't this serve as leverage for New Balance?
"Hey Valby you either sign with us or you won't go to the Olympics" as NB can make ESP stay on the 5000 team and just quit when it's race time.
Unlike USATF, the Olympics (unless I’m mistaken), has an honest effort rule, thus a scratch at the Olympics would terminate any further racing in the competition.

Shaun White scratched the Snowboarding Slopestyle in Sochi and still kept competing in his other events.

She should use her excellent 1500 speed against 5k runners, with less rounds. Why use her excellent 1500 speed against other (and some better) 1500 runners, over more rounds?
its a difficult double to pull off with the olympic schedule and the presumption is she has a better chance to finish highly in the 1500 which comes after the 5k. The thought is she might drop the 5k to be fresher for the 1500 rounds.
5k is probably her better medal chance. Some 14:50 pace race and seeing who has the best 800m. We can adjust after we see who has run 14:20 or 3:55 this year..
All respect to Valby but she’s never going to medal in any major championship if she runs even paced k’s from the front, towing faster finishers along with her as she did in the 5K. As difficult a challenge as it may be, she needs to train to surge and disrupt the tempo of those drafting on her.
If she gets good enough she could. 14:00 or 29:00 and she'd drop all but one or two. Pretty hard to get that good though.
She's NEVER running 14:00 or 29:00. Not in this life without some dope sauce.

OK stop. The 15 is AFTER the 5k, we have already been through this. She cant keep the 5k to see "how the 15 goes". The 5 is first!
So if she is dropping 5k, I would be utterly shocked if she kept it on schedule just to keep another american from running it. No way she does that. If the 15 was first maybe. Then if she fell she has another event.
Didn't Kipyegon already announce she wants to run the 5000? Chebet will and probably Tsegay, so there could be at least 3 sub-14:10 women in the race.
And ESP will not take Valby into account at all. She will make her decision on what events to run solely on the basis of what she thinks will give her the best short for a medal.

All respect to your post, but...
There was talk earlier that Valby ran that type of race because she needed to get the standard... and she did. She couldn't rely on anyone else to take her to sub 14:52... and to do a bunch of surging and such would have jeopardized her ability to make the standard.

Valby did not need the standard. She was already in based on rankings. If she got top 3 with a time of 18:30, she would be going to Paris.

Okay, thanks for that info.
But Sochi was in 2014, and there have been rule revisions since then:
Failure to Participate At all competitions under paragraphs 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.6 of the International Competition definition, an athlete shall be excluded from participation in all further events (including other events in which they are simultaneously participating) in the competition, including relays, in cases where: 4.4.1 final confirmation was given that the athlete would start in an event but then failed to participate; Note: A fixed time for the final confirmation of participation shall be published in advance. 4.4.2 an athlete qualified in any Qualification Round of an event for further participation in that event but then failed to participate further; 4.4.3 an athlete failed to compete honestly with bona fide effort. The relevant Referee will decide on this and the corresponding reference must be made in the official results. Note: The situation foreseen in Rule 4.4.3 of the Technical Rules will not apply to individual events within Combined Events. However, a medical certificate, provided by and based on an examination of the athlete by the Medical Delegate appointed under Rule 6 of the Competition Rules or, if no Medical Delegate has been so appointed, by a medical doctor so designated by 4 World Athletics Technical Rules (1 November 2019) Book C - C2.1 the Organisers, may be accepted as sufficient reason to accept that the athlete became unable to compete after confirmations closed or after competing in a previous round but will be able to compete in further events (except Combined Events individual events) on a subsequent day of the competition. Other justifiable reasons (e.g. factors independent of the athlete's own actions, such as problems with the official transport system) may, after confirmation, also be accepted by the Technical Delegate(s).
You guys been saying if she makes the 1500 team she will open a spot for Valby in 5k.
What would she gain for it?
Will she get paid at least?
They (ESP and Valby) don't even have the same sponsor so I find it hard to believe.
ESP's better event and, more importantly, likely best chance to medal is in the 1500m. Running a 5,000m which ends the night prior to the opening round of the 1500m after also running a heat of the 5,000m is going to tax her.
If she makes the 1500m team she is likely to ultimately not compete in the 5,000m and Valby is safe there because she is the alternate and qualified.
The better question is what happens if Valby gets a top 3 finish in the 10,000m and either gets a time qualifier or moves up the rankings enough to qualify.

If ESP runs the 1500 and not the 5K, and Valby makes it into the 10K by getting the standard/ranking and a top 3 placement, then Whitini Morgan would be the next in line to go to Paris in the 5k (see has the ranking).
