Katelyn Tuohy of adidas raced for the first time all spring at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Friday at Hayward Field, running 16:09.22 for fourth place in the second of two semifinals of the women's 5,000 meters.
I noticed at some point (maybe 3-4 laps remaining?), she looked in pain. Good on her for toughing it out, but I’m not expecting much from her in the final.
Crazy that she did not start training until May. Hamstring, then back, then IT band. Imagine what could have been if she had a full year racing and training and altitude. Those are the breaks. Now she just has to settle into a long pro career.
That’s a lot of injuries in a short period of time. I don’t think she’s fully recovered either. She might need to mix in the arc trainer. I’m being serious.
After 22 trials Touhy said she had to learn how to close in 4:35 in a slow race.
Well she learned.
Other than that, not much to learn from that race. Couldn't really tell if she faded or coasted on last lap, as her placing was secure.
Final will be fun, Valby will take it out... it's what she does. Touhy, if she's hiding some fitness could really use the standard here. (only 1 week left to chase another race)
Regardless of time as the heat went out slow, tuohy looked strong and controlled. Glad to have her back. Crazy her first race back is the Olympic trials!
She looked good.
But seems the top 3 will be Cranny, St. Pierre, and Schweizer. They look dominant
So she’s been battling injuries all this year. Ooph that is tough.
She’s realistic about her chances “even if I get top 3, I wouldn’t qualify for time” and is basically just running for the experience.
Lots of respect for her.
Absolutely. She is kind of girl who would put in hard work and best effort no matter the odds. Does this increase the chance of overtraining and injuries? Absolutely. But we learn our limits by failures, not by holding back or taking shortcuts. Win or lose, Tuohy displays the true spirit of running.
Glad to see her racing again though! And she just seems happy to be out there competing at the trials without much pressure since she knows her build up hasn’t been great.
There is such poor review of the race by most of the posters. If you were watching the live results I can see how you thought KT was “way in the back”. But if you were watching the race you just saw a mass of people move in lane 2/3 to increase the pace. KT was on the rail and waited for the opportunity to move ahead without panicking, slowing, moving, speeding up and being in lane 2/3 for the rest of the race.
It was good racing and paid off.
Can KT sit and kick? Yes. Is that a skill needed for pro racing. Yes.
