Just rewatched the 800, and to me there's no question that Wanyonyi was going to overtake Kinyamal had he not been tripped. That being said, Kinyamal would've advanced on the fastest loser spot even so. No idea what the heat winner Laban Chepkwony's story is but his burst of speed was ridiculous to get the jump on that heat.
Both Moraas make it but Lilian Odira massive kick to make this a complete stunner with 1:58.26 woman Vivain Kiprotich missing out. All under qualifying mark I believe.

It's not like they did a good job of publicizing it at all. Have you been to the Athletics Kenya website? It's hasn't been upated in months. I only knew about it because a messageboard posters said it would be on - there was no proof that was true. I assume the youtube thread isn't available in Kenya.
Also worth noting the camera angle is not showing any spectators who would be in the main stands. You can hear decent crowd noise so it feels maybe a tad misleading.

Kinda shocked to see the stands nearly empty. Isn't this the biggest sport in Kenya? I just watched the 1500 final with some big stars and was definitely surprised to see the place so empty.
Is that normal? Do they get big turnouts for any meets?
Kipyegon crushed 10k WR holder Beatrice Chebet by 6 seconds while Moraa lost to Lilian Odira and Reynold Cheruiyot edged out Daniel Munguti and Timothy Cheruiyot.
-Sarah Moraa is on the African Champs team and that will provide an opportunity to get a big rankings boost/hit the standard before the deadline
-I do wonder if Komen has strong results at African champs if they try to snub Munguti (if he fails to hit standard) even though they can technically send him…but Tim is 100% safe
-the 800m champ Odira is coming back from a pregnancy and is a good story
NAIROBI, Kenya, June 14 - National 800m champion Lilian Odira admits she has made a lot of sacrifices to recover her best form after returning from Get the latest local and international sports updates, football, rugby, athle...
Below is the invited list and start lists for tomorrow
First though a few thoughts on the mid-d/distance events:
Men
800 - I see this as 3 out of 4 favourites - Wanyonyi, Kinyamal, Kemei, Ngeno. There are semis here which are bound to be difficult, especially semi2 with Wanyonyi, Kinyamal, Festus Lagat. I'd be shocked if Emmanuel Korir makes the final. Dark horses I'd say Lagat, Noah Kibet and Ferguson Rotich can't be discounted.
1500 - Again 4 favourites - T. Cheruiyot, R. Cheruiyot, Komen, A. Kipsang. Kipsang with the most to prove after poor start to the season. Don't see others mixing it up; best of the rest perhaps Keter, Simotwo, M. Kipsang, Munguti, Amon Kemboi. Missing: Josphat Kipkirui (2nd at nationals)
3000SC - 3 favourites - Koech, Kibiwott, A. Serem but Leonard Bett is good but question with his return from a big injury and this being his first steeple since Budapest WC. Dark horses would be E. Serem (8:20 at altitude can't be disregarded, brother of Amos Serem, apparently 16 years old...) and Mathew (Kip)Kosgei. Like Emmanuel Korir, I'm not expecting much from Conseslus Kipruto here.
5000 - Probably the most wide open event for men with Krop, Kemboi, Kwemoi, Masai, Kurgat, Kiplangat going with the standard but Ebenyo and Waithaka could factor. Dark horse could be national champ Daniel Kimaiyo, who I do think will be there despite not being on the invited list and 17 year old Andrew Kiptoo. Worth noting Emmanuel Kiprop is undefeated on the track this year too with 3:38/13:15 SBs.
Women:
800 - Strait final where M. Moraa should dominate and Vivian Kiprotich and Naomi Korir look set to go. Lilian Odira could factor and Mary's sister Sarah is worth watching ahead of a probable World Junior appearance.
1500 - Faith Kipyegon should dominate if she races but a few questions surrounding her recent injury. I think Chepchirchir will be fine but then between Ejore, Jebitok, Mary Ekiru, perhaps Dorcas Ewoi if she goes might be close.
3000SC - Trio of B. Chepkoech, Cherotich, J. Chepkoech seemed safe but J. Chepkoech has been struggling so if an in-form Doris Lemngole if she can recover from NCAA + travel she looks primed to make a real bid at this team.
5000 - Looks like this is where Kipyegon will open her season. I think Chebet is favourite though. 3rd spot might be between Margaret Kipkemboi and Agnes Ngetich. Missing: Lillian Rengeruk, Emmaculate Anyango
Amazing post. Do you live in Kenya? How do you know so much?
Thanks, no I don't live in Kenya, just enjoy following it
Big takeaway from today was that we should expect some more surprises tomorrow
800s semis were very interesting, the final could be the race of the meet, certainly looks the hardest team to make. This guy Laban Chepkwony I'd never heard of but he used to be a 400 runner, runs for KDF.
Munguti really surprised me, his races in Europe this year were not great but he ran the race of his life when it mattered most. He's in ranking quota atm and on Paavo Nurmi Games start list next week
Faith Kipyegon almost easily beating Chebet was interesting, both looking to double one on each end of 5000. Reminded me a bit of the Kenyan XC trials though, I reckon Chebet will be closer in Paris
probably Mary Moraa eased off but I don't think she expected Odira to run that well. Sarah Moraa is without standard

Munguti getting in these C-class meets angers me. I get in this case it’s probably unavoidable with no DLs, but guy has been an outstanding pacemaker and won gold on the World XC relays. He should get a lane in a DL here and there and any Gold-level meet he wants.
EDIT: bad example as this IS a gold meet, but it shouldn’t have taken this long

Read Kimaiyo was skipped over African Champs because he didn’t have a sub-13:30 time. Which I guess means his road time doesn’t count. Would be nice to see him get a good rep here.
For Josphat Kipkirui Sang, wonder if they are going to prep him for World Juniors. Him going against Myers would be a great one. Possibly Mehary too though not sure what distance he’d do.
Glad Kimaiyo is in tomorrow, idk but I feel like he could really surprise here. He was dominant at nationals while leading a lot and surging but still had enough for a big last lap.
I wonder why Kipkirui Sang wan't here and not picked for African Champs either. Does he have enough tests? I would have thought he does. WU20 makes sense to be the goal for him now
Ebenyo out, but I feel like the 5000 isn't that different than the 10000 but less likely to factor if he made that team. Good to see Etir in. No Andrew Kiptoo or Emmanuel Kiprop
As for Ebenyo there was this other guy 12 years ago who also left the Eugene Kenyan trials 10000 disappointed then surprisingly also didn't make the 5000 team in Nairobi. He moved to the roads, think he did pretty well...I certainly wish Ebenyo the best in the future, he's easy to support, seems a genuinely nice guy

Yes Kimaiyo has the potential to make it interesting! They’d have to get him on a plane really quick to hit a sub-13:05. Kipkirui Sang i think might be tests because I remember reading the explanation they didn’t say anything about not hitting a necessary time. Big odd considering his pedigree, but possibly it is a narrow miss on timing.
