My teammate is a prepper and on long runs has been telling me to stock up on long grain rice, canned beans, bottled water and a generator. He keeps saying “the big one is coming.” I’m starting to consider it.
how are y’all dealing with the ever present apocalyptic doomsday scenario?

I don’t think about it. If being American doesn’t get me out of trouble then nothing will. Not worth worrying about
Don't fight for and fulfill the agendas of these unscrupulous politicians. They will not be on the front lines. Refuse their schemes that demand compliance. They will probably escalate things and charge, fine, imprison, take away rights, freeze banl accounts, toss around the idea of internment camps in the name of compliance. Resist the evil and selfish agenda.

I would stock up on necessities not because of WWIII, but because climate change is going to make the weather very volatile. I live in Houston, TX. I was without power for 12 days after Hurricane Ike. Lost power (and water) for four days during the big freeze in 2021. Lost power for three days after the derecho in May of this year. And my neighborhood was one of the few that did not flood during Harvey. Odds are pretty good that these severe weather events will just get more and more frequent and more severe. We have a camp stove with a half dozen propane cannisters in our closet with enough pasta, flour, etc. to be able to make food for a week. We are lucky that a new grocery store in our neighborhood was built with a huge generator. They stayed open after the derecho even though everywhere else in our neighborhood was without power for days. The lack of storm hardening infrastructure is a bit frightening.
As for WWIII, it makes for good tik tok videos but is not going to happen. The main reason is that a rising authoritarian right wing in Europe and the US will largely let Russia and China have a few wins. Russia will eventually agree to an armistice that will give it Donetsk and Luhansk. China will not invade Taiwan. It will opt to keep the status quo with an agreement with the West that Taiwan will not be recognized as fully independent from China. China's grand plan was to use internal consumer demand to power economic growth and to use its market power in manufacturing and natural resources to position it as being indispensable to the West. China's internal consumer demand has crashed due to demographic collapse and its failure to have open capital markets. So, everyone in China put their retirement savings into real estate, causing the EverGrande real estate bubble/crisis. China's failure to reopen in a timely fashion after the pandemic caused a lot of countries to take significant steps towards onshoring production and reducing reliance on China. So, China remains heavily dependent on exports and cannot last a month if the West boosts tariffs in response to an invasion of Taiwan. Russia's armed forces have been devastated by the war in Ukraine. Their talk about pushing westward is nothing but talk. They simply do not have the personnel or equipment to take on NATO. Ukraine has completely filled their military dance card.
Going to see some old friends this weekend. Have Noah Kahan tix in July. Still going to train for a Spring 2025 marathon. No changes for me.
In all honesty, I don't get the preppers. They put a lot of money and labor into surviving a nuclear/biological/chemical holocaust without regard to the fact that the planet would be an unlivable wasteland for centuries. I guess being one of the last humans to die of starvation in a small backyard bunker is some sort of victory? Enjoy those freeze dried meals and drinking recycled urine!
This. Here's a question: what would you do if you were a billionaire who ACTUALLY knew that the world was all-but-ending in 5 years and wanted to survive?
It's pretty clear that one guy in a bunker isn't going to last long. I'd probably try to recruit a community of hundreds of people, and start doing so right now. Then we'd actually go start living in our giant bunker in Alaska rather than waiting for the bombs to drop before we check if the light switches work. Over the next few years, we'd vet the community, iron out the kinks, and prepare for the long winter.
Having a bunch of canned food and a gun does nothing. The food will run out, and the gun...well, that would only be useful at the very end. What we would need is a way to grow our own food with a minumum of light. Maybe some kind of mushrooms that have been genetically engineered to have extra vitamins. Certainly we'd have all kinds of supplements and prescription medication, formulated to be as shelf-stable as humanly possible.
Water would be a huge problem; recycling would only get us so far, and groundwater would likely be undrinkable. So a huge compartment of water inside our underground city would be a must. We'd also need "spacesuits" for those rare trips outside, because who knows how hot/cold/radioactive our surroundings would get.
An effective political system is a must, since none of us have ever lived in a medium-sized tribe. Constitutional direct democracy is my choice, with the constitution formulated going in. No money needed for such a small group. Punishments would be necessarily draconian, and I would expect cabin fever to claim a lot of victims in the first few years.
With all that and whatever else NASA said I needed, I'd give us maybe a 5% chance of surviving the decades or centuries before it became safe to resurface for good. We'll breathe the fresh air, check that all our gold and bitcoin held their value, and head straight to Letsrun to see if the titan has finally fallen.
The Greenbrier bunker stands as a captivating historical landmark, inviting guests to embark on an unforgettable private or group journey through its chambers.

If there Democrats are going to get USA/NATO/EU nuked into nothing, there's nothing we can do about it in the short term. Anyone who doesn't fancy living in a Mad Max movie should just bash the Evil Democrats online every chance they get and resist all their evil policies. If the Democrats are for it (post-2014 Kiev Nazi coup Ukraine, "moderate Muslim freedom fighters"), you need to be against, if Democrats are against it (Russia/Putin, Syria/Assad, etc), then you need to be for it.
Dems are Evil eh? Just “bash” the Dems eh? Evil policies eh?
You seem angry.
You new here? It's this guy's shtick. This is all he does.

Yes, comrade.
Any other marching orders from Herr Putin? I've been offline for a bit so I just want to be sure I've got my orders straight.
Unpopular opinion, but prepers are clowns. After the society collapses the law of guns will be established and who has more guns and ammo will take all those sardines and tunas they have been stacking up. If they wanna "prep", they should be prepping on ammo for guns.
As for WW3, I don't really care. Since 1950s Soviets(now Russians) have nukes, there was always a possibility of some of their leaders going crazy and nuking US, Europe or rest of the world.
Nothing has changed. This war that is going in Ukraine may have increased the likelyhood of nuclear apocalypse but I don't think it has increased it by much. After all its just their war of agression in which they are failing massively from what I am seeing. So yeah, not really worried about WW3, as the world has already went through more turbulent times since WW2.
I’m not a doomsday guy although my wife is. Only do stuff which improves your life now. Start with growing your own food and collect water from your roof. Buy in bulk on regular things so that you have extra just in case (and save money by buying bulk). Cultivate good relationships with your neighbors. If you want a bunker make sure to turn it into a good fort for your kids or put in a remote mountain area where you would enjoy going camping several times a year.

i enjoyed this post. you've got some good deductive reasoning and forward thinking here.

Your teammate is smart. He only looks silly beforehand.
I'd like to build a bunker/bomb shelter once I have the resources. Currently, my plan is to get to southern Argentina if it looks like things will pop off. I expect that will be far enough from the action.
