My size 8 trainers were about $70-80 back in '08 when I began running as a 12 yr old... chill, big salmon. Chill. Fast food employees were making 7.25 per hour back then and now they're making 16.

The funny thing about this is that the $160 price point has remained pretty much unchanged for several years. Gel Nimbus, Gel Kayano, Glycerin, etc... those haven't gone up.
The tier down (GT-2000, Adrenaline, Ghost, etc...) have been $140 for 5-6 years (up from $130 the prior several years).
Now the top-top tier is higher... Supershoes/Supertrainers are obviously $180-$300, but that is like complaining about the price of a Mercedes AMG.
If I go to a local running store to try on a new pair, and it's a high school or college kid who is clearly a runner who is helping me out, if I like the shoes then I usually buy then and there. If the person helping me tries to upsell me on orthotic insoles or has a BMI greater than 25, I go straight home and order online.
Saucony kinvara and reebok floatride are excellent and cheap shoes. Even in rip off Britain they are cheap. Light enough to use for racing 5ks.

I'd day from running warehouse to road runner sports to recommended online sport retailers to amazon, you have enough options to find your go to model(s) on clearance. Also, look for reward programs that enable you to cut costs significantly.
But dont buy from ebay unless you a) investigate the seller, b) match model # and color scheme and c) absolutely have to. Counterfits do exist.
The rest of the world out there is being exceptionally greedy too.
