i wanted to get some thoughts on this topic. I started running 5 years ago and I enjoyed it so much in the beginning, learning different programs and experimenting with strength, balancing nutrition and getting tips from the internet. Once i knew i was going to run my first marathon Chicago 2023, I enrolled with a coach. I tried it all methods - Heart Rate Zones coaching, time/ pace based coaching then back to heart rate zone. I was quite happy and proud with my time 3:54:18 ( i was injured for 8 weeks during the training block). Since then with a new coach, I feel burnout and i dont enjoy training anymore. I also got slower. One aspect i liked when i started the sport was researching ,experimenting, improving and getting better. All that is currently outsourced and i am grateful i have the means to do so. But I am not getting the results and not enjoying the process. I was curious to see if anyone feels this way. I am not an expert but i feel like coaching strips away from gaining self confidence in your abilities and having some agency. Its also takes the fun out of the process (of figuring it out). FYI i am not an athlete and this is a hobby. Who is self coaching? What resources do you use? How do you keep yourself accountable?
Just send me a message and we discuss how to best coach you. Welcome to magic superior online coaching. 🇸🇪🧙🏼♂️🇸🇪Coach J.S
To many runners it's interesting and alot of fun to try through trial and error find the way to personal success. But of course to the vast majority it won't be a success. A much better way to enjoy and get alot of fun with training is to hire a coach who by long experience knows exactly how to fast improve the runner whatever level and individual needs, to reach individual highest possible greatness. 🇸🇪🧙🏼♂️🇸🇪
A coach can be valuable if a person does not want to spend the hours (and it can be many) researching how to train.
A coach can be valuable both to push you and to hold you back. I have coached adult distance runners and often the most valuable thing I brought was putting a "governor" on their easy runs. I also think I helped with getting intensities more dialed in whether with pace, HR, RPE, or a combination.
Also serving as a sounding board. One runner I coached seemed to want to run every race in a 100 miles while also wanting to qualify for Boston. My job was to get him to focus on the big goal he hired me for (running a BQ) and we could integrate SOME of the races (he often wanted to do well in them which would require tapering and taking away from the overall big goal).
I was also part mental skills coach. I had runners who could not focus well enough for 20 or 30 minutes to do a high intensity run so I adapted or worked with on ways to focus.
You know, this coaching thing has become a topic here in threads for me. So ima chime in again.
I believe whole heartedly that there is nothing like having a Coach. Give him your 10$-15$ a week or whatever and give him your race or goals n he/she should be able to get you there. You do however need to find a coach you click with.. If you find parts of your training is too hard, you communicate that to Him/her n they ll adjust your schedule.
I remember the first time I was asked to run 12x1k@4min. I was like, "Is this guy for real?", I got it done, took extra rest between em cause I couldn't do it. Anyway, just a story for u. (I was training in Mexico then too. Hot n humid. Man that SUCKED.)
If you aren t liking training, tell coach. If he doesn't care or put the time into you that u think u r paying for, change coach. He s paid BY YOU to coach you. Not paid BY someone to coach you. He needs to taylor TO YOU.
Again, we r talking 10-15$ a week, like 2 Starbucks coffee n u have a Pro training U.
You can train yourself. Im totally not against that. But I noticed that we "THINK" we are doing good. But we re just taking shots in the dark at info we are coming across. It s all new info so we think: "WOW, I get it. I see now." But we are just looking at these little pieces of info at a time.. A good coach has a broader view of the whole thing and puts it all together like a puzzle.
Everything should be clear for him/her n they should keep you injury free and get you as close to your goal as possible. I say as close as possible cause I'm the type that believes in having impossible goals. Sorta: "If you aim for the stars, at least you'll hit the moon."

Good luck. Trick in training is sustainability.
You did not respond to the issues of the original poster, and if your coffee is that expensive, no wonder you need high salaries and have a taxing health care system tenfold as expensive as it should.

GUYS, Having a coach isn't necessary.. If you want to train yourself, you can. Go to book store, read and train yourself. PERIOD..
You might get it wrong, you might train optimally (but odds r low on training optimally. But who cares, you re NOT going to the olympics),
Having a coach DOES help you become accountable. He tells you what to do, YOU DO IT. You don t do it, you feel like a lazy bum burning cash. So U do it.. Stop micro debating. (I can t believe that a response on this site is always a fight)
Damn, I even have a dude replying to me with something about the Health care in my country.. Like, "WHAT???" Another with the price of my coffee.. (FYI, I don t goto Starbucks. I banned them a long time ago.. I was commenting to help the masses understand.) Samcallan, Yeah, U got me. I don t know how much Coaches cost.. If u see this, you can reply n let me know. I'd like to know cause I need a Speed Coach for a race in September.. (FYI, not that it means anything, I like you. Just saying but cause Ive read your comments.)
