I wonder if this is a destination that might appeal to Diljeet Taylor. despite all the talented LDS runners she gets at BYU it limits her recruiting territory. I bet there's lots of blue chip runners she misses out on every year who don't want to go to a mormon school and live under that honor code.
Colorado has altitude and I bet a big pay bump for her.
If Colorado was smart they would offer Dave Smith a Deion Sanders level salary to poach him from OSU. With what he's been able to do at OSU, putting him at altitude would put Mike Smith to shame.
But only an insane (and unlikely) salary would lure him away from a guaranteed national championship winning team for fall of 2024.

hmmmm
BYU is objectively a better gig. Their women's XC program, even before Diljeet, has had 10x the success of Colorado.
Coaching athletes that don't drink or party, who often times have eligibility into their late 20s, and at altitude is every coaches dream.

yeah, you're probably right. a friend of mine went to CU. before he went there he had drank maybe one beer in his entire life. after 4 years at CU he was a full on alcoholic

No. Dave builds a team by recruiting foreigners. That is the antithesis of Wetmores approach.
I give him a great deal of credit for the way he handled himself during the cancel culture attempt a few years ago. If that were me, even though it'd be endearing that former athletes came to my defense and the truth prevailed, the intense scrutiny during that process would be enough of an emotional rollercoaster itself to want to quit and lead to post-traumatic stress on a personal level.
He has otherwise lived every coach's dream building Colorado into a national powerhouse program, coaching NCAA champions, pros & olympians, and influenced the American running culture. Not to mention, the value of any and all Colorado real estate in his name has absolutely sky rocketed since the 1990s and 2000s.
Wetmore and Burroughs were damaged by the investigation that Colorado conducted into complaints about poor mental health and disordered eating amongst former members of the Buffs program. CU didn’t want to fire them but, will allow their contracts to expire and for Mark to retire with dignity.
The AD wants a fresh start as they return to the Big XII this coming fall. They need younger and fresher thinking. With her career pretty much over due to age and the broken ankle, I wouldn’t be surprised if Joe Bosshard and Emma Coburn are hired as Distance/XC Assistants under a new Director/Head Coach brought in to revamp the program top-to-bottom. Jenny Simpson is also a possibility to run the distance side of the team.
I also wouldn’t be shocked if Damon Martin from Adams State or Chris Siemers from Mines were tabbed.
Very unlikely Jenny Simpson would be in a situation to take over the program. She has very little actual coaching experience and she wants to start a family. Seems unlikely they’d bring anyone in who has no actual experience at the college level (maybe Ritz, maybe), but there will be to many good candidates to fill this role who will have had success at the college level. If they decide to hire a track person to direct the program (like the Malone’s who are currently on the track staff at CU) then that opens up some flexibility for the XC coach hire. It will be interesting.
Exactly, the job would go to one of the Malones if he or she wanted it. If not, they're not going to bring in someone old or from in-state or with little collegiate experience coaching. It would be a younger, high level assistant at a P5 (soon to be P4) school. Bryan Berryhill would be more likely than any of the current or former pros listed on this thread.
Art S. did a great job at CSU but his wife got a big time academic job out of state and they moved. It would probably take equivalent type job prospects for her if they were to move back to Colorado. And sure the higher profile at a DI school with a storied past in XC is different than DII, but Chris S. has shown he can coach and run a program.
2. CU has never cared about athletics and they have been fortunate to get some of the coach they have (Wetmore was an assistant and they handed him the job in the 90s AFTER he cut his hair for the interview)
3. It’s not going to be a flashy hire. They don’t pay well, they are going to struggle in the modern NCAA landscape.
My guess is a career track man. Maybe a throws or field event coach. Hire a young motivated assistant but it won’t be the same
Mike Smith to Colorado would be cool, but I keep hearing future pros being told Mike Smith will have a formal Nike group in Flagstaff and be done coaching NAU. Some serious distance coaches musical chairs between those 2 positions and all who would apply and what jobs they leave open!
While Mike Smith already coaches pros, I do wonder if he is better suited to college athletes. He develops runners 18-23. These younger athletes seem to thrive with his mentorship. Would it be the same magic with a more developed and older athlete? He just seems like the perfect college coach.
Although I’ve heard he’s got something for the fall and will be announced in June.
Maybe he’ll reconsider!?!?
Ironically I think Brosnan would be a good fit. He obviously can create culture and Colorado seems to have a history of that. With the hire of coach Prime in Football athletics seems to have an outside the box way of thinking. Wetmore is a little unorthodox himself. I just don’t know if Wetmore is really leaving. No one seems to actually know.
