Also, the motivation for me to become a successful distance runner was purely intrinsic. My dad was a fast runner, so I think I got the running genes from him, but my parents did not push me to be successful, they were pretty laissez-faire. I think that was best. I listened to my coaches, and I had a great coach in high school (non-domineering, & a nice person).
If you want your daughter to have a good experience in high school, you need to be in a district where they have good coaches (and non-domineering coaches). A good team culture! I'm from the state of Illinois and I didn't go to this school, but something like Naperville North. They have a good tradition and I think they've been good for like 3+ decades.
I think the Naperville North coach used to talk at this, I've glanced at their website, seems like positive stuff! Keep it light, keep is positive! too much seriousness in high school sports!
