Am I the only one that thinks this is a pretty solid race for him? It is a big country with a lot of talented runners who are a lot older than him...
No . . . I'm with you.
Lex was never going to advance to Eugene in any race, especially the 10k which is a distance he had never run until his XC races last fall.
On the other hand, true frosh Ty Gorze/WA came into college with a 29:00/10k, 3rd fastest HS time ever, then ran 28:22 at the Stanford Invite back in March (the race where Lex ran 29:25).
Lex was significantly ahead to Ty (30th) in this West Regional race.
Moreover, redshirt frosh Evan Jenkins/WA , who ran 28:04 at the Stanford Invite and beat Lex at the recent Pac-12s, finished way behind both last night (45th).
Furthermore, Lex closed in 59.64, third fastest behind the top two finishers (58.88 & 59.11) -- which suggests he's running the 10k too conservatively, holding back a bit too much to ensure he doesn't blow up at the end and finish last like Jenkins did.
Lex & Ty are 19, Evan is 20.
Compared to his cohorts, Lex did just fine, especially considering his "sweet spot" is the 5k.
With Leo advancing to the quarterfinals in the 1500 -- Leo has closing speed a bit faster than Lex, but his best event is also the 5k -- have to look back and say Ricardo Santos has done a fine job coaching the twins throughout their freshman year at Stanford. (And Andy Powell's coaching of Ty throughout his frosh year has been, well, questionable.)
Despite Leo's appendicitis last fall and Lex's broken arm over the winter, both raced all three seasons, with more still to come.
Harking back to the old adage, "the best ability is availability," the Young twins have accomplished more this season than all of their upperclass teammates save Ky.
Looking forward to more L&L VLogs this summer once school is out (mid-June) and they have time again to reflect on their first year at Stanford.
