"Expensive" is all relative. As I mentioned above, you can buy a really nice bike for around $1000 to $1500. For many that might be expensive. For others, not so much. My oldest brother bought a nice road bike back in the mid 90s for $1500. In today's dollars that is almost $3100. For $3100 today you can get one hell of a bike. Conversely, the bikes that now sell for $1500 are probably nicer than what he paid for his bike (except for the frame).
Personally once you get into the $3000+ range you're getting into expensive territory. The bike that I do most of my training on is a Scott Addict SE. I checked the Scott website recently and it is now selling at $5300. Scott has another bike on their website, the Addict RC Ultimate that retails for $16,000. I would like to ride that bike but there is no way that I would buy one. Most of the pros that are riding bikes that expensive are not paying for them out of pocket so there's that.
