In football, if a QB goes 38 for 45 with 4 touchdowns and 105 passer rating, they are praised by all fans and no one is trying to find holes in the performance.
If a basketball player has a triple-double scoring 45 points, no one belittles it or treats them as unworthy.
But, if a high school JUNIOR runs 4:01, we have to somehow let everyone know that is not as impressive as you might think.
I'm so tired of you old people trying to cope with the fact that you guys just sucked. Jim Ryun broke 4 as a junior after running for like 2 years in the 60s in trash spikes on a trash track. Danielson and Liquori did it in HS in the 60s too. Runners were better before you, and runners are better after you. Unless you want to draw spike progression as an x^2 curve where whenever you ran just so happened to be x = 0.
Next door in Alabama Ethan Edgesworth ran 4:03 in the 1600m at the state meet. 2nd place was 4:24.
Ethan Edgeworth is my new favorite HS runner. I never thought I'd see 8:38 next to an Alabama runner's name. I hope he takes a crack at sub-4 soon, he'd have a real shot. Afaik the Alabama mile record is sitting at 4:07 from Ethan Strand in 2021, and Edgeworth just crushed the 1600 record.

Patrick McGregor of Hoover ran 4:07.07 for 1600m back in 2009 which is the official mile record, although Ethan Edgesworth's 1600m is a better performance.
When I was competing in the 90s a guy running 4:20 in Alabama was usually best in the state. Now it may not even score.
According to milesplit Alabama had 3 guys run under 4:15 from 2005-2020. Since 2021 it's been done 22 times. 7 of those were this year, 3 of those guys are juniors. Just insane improvement at the top and in terms of depth.
Why in the world would you speak ill of a high school kid winning a state championship in record time? Why in the world would you criticize any high school athlete. I was there coaching another school in a separate class. The kid ran great. Anyone who criticizes this kid should go back to their mother’s basement where they belong and play pong on their Commodore 64.
I was there!! Awesome to watch. I wish there was an actual race video but it doesn't seem like the Friday session was recorded.
if you happen to recall, what his split at 800
Look at video. I think 1:58.7.
He's going for sub 4:00 mile this Sat night in ATL . Will have a Pacer this time and will be rested. For this last race he ran a pretty hard 3200 the night before. He's got a shot!
