Majors seems to me like the kind of guy who will probably end up like Cole Reed, really solid at anything under 1600, but just another one of Rocky's dozens of 16/17 minute XC guys
Stadtlander wins 1600 with Heemeyer only 5th. Lucas rallies from day 1 to beat all the CDA guys. Places 5 through 11 will all be returning for xc and/or track in 2024/2025.
Boise easily sweeps the girls team title.
Rocky leads the boys score through day 1 and half of day two. Boise claws to a 2 point lead heading into the 4x4, and miraculously, Rocky wins it, with Boise being edged out by Post Falls, causing Rocky to win the team title.
I'm assuming Ringert, Ihmels, Stadtlander, as well as CDA, Rocky, and Boise's top guys will go to various post season races, so we can still see some improvement going into xc.
6A District III, in order: -Rocky Mountain: Led by Cody Lucas, Rocky Mountain has awesome depth that they can pull from. Realistically, they have Parker Goggins, Hyrum Tuft, Thomas Kurtz, and Jacob Thomas that will round out their scoring 5, and then a handful of other runners that could be in their top 7. Rocky really is the deepest in this district at 5-10, and that gives them a lot of options. -Timberline: Timberline has the best 1-2 punch in the district in getting two returners into the state 3200m, as well as returning the third place finisher in the 800 who was a 4:25 miler and competent cross runner. Beyond that, they return 4:35, 4:39, and 10:07 boys. Plenty of depth backs these guys up, and they are very strong at 1-3. -Boise: Boise has the 2nd best returner in the district and returns a lot of very solid depth at 4:26/9:46, 4:31, 4:35/9:52, 4:40/10:01, 4:46/10:05, 4:47/10:08. They don't really have any weakness, and could easily develop into the top team in the district. -Mountain View: Led by Benjamin Jensen, Mountain View has a great returning top 5 that could be dangerous late in the year. Their 2-5 are 4:27:9:55, 1:57/4:30, 4:32/9:54, and 10:13. Their #6 is still sub 4:40.
There's a clear top 4 in the district. Following that, there are 4 teams vying for 3 more spots. These really aren't in order. -Meridian: Meridian is bringing in good talent, and like Boise, is basically only scoring 4 runners. They had great development over the track season, and look like a real threat behind the returning state champ. -Centennial: Can Centennial stay healthy? They have 3 rising juniors and a rising senior that are nice pieces, but then have a 10:22 or 4:44 as their 5th. They struggled mightily with health in the fall. -Owyhee: Led by a 4:18 boy, Owyhee has the 2nd best low stick in this group. They are really solid through 3 with 4:30 and 4:35, but then drop off to 4:49 and 4:53. Can 4 and 5 narrow the gap a bit to take advantage of their #1? -Eagle: Eagle is young, led by a 4:37/9:54 sophomore. Beyond that, they return a 10:04 freshman, 10:06 sophomore, and 10:14 freshman. Their #5 is a rising senior that has run 4:46 and 10:18, so not super strong, but weak either. Can those freshmen and sophomores make the jump?
That 7th spot for Rocky is going to probably shift a lot i am assuming Maxim Beeler is injured since he hasn't ran anything this track season I'm not sure if he will do XC
Last year someone said on the Idaho thread that Maxim did Hockey. I wonder if he quit running for that, since scholarships might be less competitive
That’s possible. Seems like hockey overlaps with some of the xc season
Rohlinger will be varsity for sure. He was last year and the year before. Shaw (4:45 1600) will probably take the 7th spot if he joins XC. If he doesn’t, their 7th man will be Dance or Kennedy. I don’t know of any standout freshmen coming in to the team.
Who is going to be Timberline's XC coach? Isn't that still up in the air? I'm guessing the Ihmels kids will be back next year. Who are the 5A girls teams to watch next year?
I've got Timberline, Rocky, and Boise as being by far the best. The next tier after that looks a grouping of the following:
Owyhee loses their #2 and #5, and back fill in with a girl that ran 5:29 and 11:46 and then have a big question mark after that. They look like they are good through 4. They might be bringing in a 5:40 girl from 8th grade.
Capital returns all 7 girls from last year, but was the first team out of state cross. Not all of those girls ran track or at least ran distance races, either. They are good at 1-3 but 4 and 5 are question marks. It does look like Lily Sullivan's sister might be running at Capital next year and she ran 5:32 on the track this spring as an 8th grader.
Eagle has maybe the lowest number of question marks heading into the season but isn't deep past 5. They have the best set of 1600m times at a 5:24 average and their #5 at 5:34.
Mountain View is in a total rebuild after losing Stevens and Chitwood but looks like they could have the pieces to be good again and they are bringing in the girls that got 2nd and 5th at the West Ada MS championship.
CDA, Post Falls, Rigby, Highland, and Thunder Ridge all lose so much that I don't know how they can be competitive for a trophy, but they might add 8th graders.
Owyhee, Capital, and Eagle all have true #1 runners in girls that went 11:04, 11:05, and 11:08.
North Idaho Distance Project of Coeur d'Alene Idaho traveled out to Nike Outdoor Nationals to compete. Stay tuned to see how these middle and high schoolers ...
Mountain View and IF absolutely could have raced in the Elite section if they wanted to. Both were better than Burley. Eagle would have beat Burley badly at NXR if you take their open merge times and insert them into the championship field, and Highland beat Eagle at state cross. A lot more Idaho teams could have been in it if they chose to.
