One of the greatest distance runners of all time is Jakob Ingebrigtsen who can achieve this time if he trained for it. But the thing is the marathon is reserved for 35+ pros or 1500-5k runners who made finals but never had enough speed to medal. Yakob is not in such a position. Maybe when he hits closer to 40 you will have your questions answered.

except ingy isn't one of the greatest though. That would be Bekele, Geb or El g.
Jim Ryun already did when you extrapolate his cinder equivalent, poor nutrition & training, increased competition, super shoes, and changed gravitational pull of the earth over the last 60 years.
Given that in the West the best Marathon runners almost always have had a career on track, surely it won't be someone coming out of nowhere and you'll probably have heard his name.
Currently the best active white marathon runner is probably Cam Levins, but while I think he has a chance to break 2:05, I'm not sure he has a 2:03 in him.

Hi boomer. Which records are Bekele and Geb currently holding? Your "to the gills" idols are not really relevant today, because there are better runners now.

Most World XC titles and that will never be broken.
His 2:04:58 is equivalent to 2:02-03 in cheatershoes.
Really- he didn't break 2:04 but it's a legitimate question- How fast could he have run that day in Carbon Plated shoes. They're not cheater shoes anymore, they're legal and worn by almost everyone.

Almgren
Yeah, I think he's the most likely candidate. 59:23 is a good indicator that he can already get in the 2:04 range. Plus, he runs high mileage.
Emile Cairess (I believe he's mixed white/Pakistani heritage) is getting there, and I think he'll run 2:05 if he stays injury-free for a couple of years. His progress on the roads has already been impressive, dropping from 2:08.07 to 2:06.46 in a year. Canova seems to go for a patient approach with his athletes, building them up over time.
Both of those are heading towards there physical prime as well - Almgren is 28 and Cairess 26. There's room for them to improve as overall athletes.
He moved to the USA when he was three years old. His father is from Canada and his mother is from the USA.
Indeed - he is not American-born, as rojo can't point out often enough.
Grant Fisher is American-born since his mother is American. He wasn’t born in the United States. Many US citizens are born abroad by parents of US citizenship living and working abroad.
I am happy Grant Fisher chose to represent the USA. I wish Mondo Duplantis would have made the same choice but it is his prerogative.
I believe Grant Fisher could break the US marathon record and run sub 2:04 if/when he decides to run marathons.

Hi moron. Bekele holds the 2000 meters indoor and the 5000 meters indoor, both without clown shoes, both withouth clown indoor BU track and both racing them a couple of times (only once for the 2000 m) in his entire lifetime. Oh, and of course he is still the 2nd fastest of all time in both the 5000 m and 10000 m and the third all time on the marathon.
Geb doesn't hold WRs but "only" an african record and a couple of national record (why isn't he holding them? Because there is some guy named Kenenisa Bekele that sweeped them). Oh and he is still 3rd all time on both 5000 m and 10000 m and 6th all time on the 3000, both indoor and outdoor
In other words: most of today athletes (and I am speaking about dudes that will go to the Olympics, not about random morons in the NCAA which would be lapped twice on a 5000 by them) with cheater clown shoes on a 10000 m race would finish within a distance somewhere between 100 and 300 meters (depending on which of the two you are focusing about and from the exact PR of each athlete) behind prime Geb and prime Bekele without cheater shoes...
