Agree it's on Nike Marketing, but I don't agree it's on Schumacher. Nike has done an atrocious job in the last five years in identifying talent and signing distance talent. There was a time when they would sign not just blue chip athletes, but second and third tier potential athletes just to cover their bases and take some potential flyers. They used to play the long game better than anyone, because they had the money to do so. Sign 5-8 athletes per year, knowing two would go on to be world class, two more would go on to make teams, and 2-3 would be a bust. No big deal. What top talent has BTC acquired since Schweizer? When was that, 2018, when she was the top college athlete?
On the women's side it's particularly bad. Who do they have as a lock at this point to make a USA Olympic team in any event 1500 and above? NB and On stepped up in a big way and now both brands are reaping the benefits big time.
In the end, it's the talent (athletes) that makes or breaks teams in all sports and Nike simply hasn't made the investments to win systemwide in the running market. It's a trend that is crippling the entire company.
