Decades ago (RIP Sports Illustrated) an academic study group from North Carolina visited a remote area in the then USSR. The tour included a friendly bball game against the local state sponsored team. The local headlines showed how the mighty soviets defeated the UNC men's basketball team.
China is corrupt, though? And it's communist party "disappears" anyone who threatens the regime. So I'm not sure what your point is. It's not western propaganda if it's true.
I can't believe this is getting coverage on CNN, NY Times, etc.
I also can't believe that He Jie who ran a 2:06:57 NR marathon on Mach 24 would be running a half marathon so soon. Clearly he can destroy the half record.
This fairly irrelevant story has been eagerly covered by most of the major western media outlets because they are at the end of the day controlled by western intelligence agencies (google Operation Mockingbird and read about what Seymour Hersh and Carl Bernstein uncovered in the 70s).
They are promoting this story because it portrays China as corrupt, and these days they are looking for whatever angle they can find to sway public opinion in an anti-Chinese direction, in order to mentally prepare the public for the intense geopolitical rivalry and second Cold War which the western security establishment is pushing us towards.
You sure it's the west doing most of the pushing in this direction and not China?

I don't understand how they put up fast marathons with such slow 5,000m/10,000m times. This guy and the chinese guy behind him have 5,000m/10,000m PRs of around 14:20's and 29:40. Yet they run 2:07 for the marathon. We need Americans running on those courses! He'll be in the Olympics, and has a faster time than all of our guys, yet I'm going to bank on our guys beating these two Chinese guys. Hopefully I remember this and specifically look to see how they do this summer. But I kind of think these courses are not the same as the courses run in the United States. A track is a track, and these guys are nowhere near as fast as American track people. Maybe they measure marathon courses differently in china.
China likes to fly out ABA teams to there so their national team can destroy them on national TV. ( I was a part of the team, not a player). It's a show for citizens to show world wide dominance. At the airport citizens lined up for autographs thinking they were NBA players, I even was asked for one just cause I am tall lol

I'm not 100% on board with "the real story" here, but there's no need for propaganda to be false.
How does a 2:06 guy have a 10k PR barely under 30? Those marathon courses are either short or they're having him cut the course.
Kelvin Kiptum’s pr in the 10k is 28:17 according to World Athletics… so maybe people are just not focusing on the 10k? Otherwise, looks like Grant Fisher should pop off a 1:52 in one of his first few marathons.

Kelvin Kiptum ran that 10k the year he was 'only' running 59:53 for a half marathon in 2019 as a teenager. Then a few years later he was able to split faster within a marathon, so not exactly the same. This chinese dude ran his slow track PRs last year, much more recently.
I'd assume that simply the Chinese race org paid the 3 Africans slightly more to not win the race than the prize money they'd have won for coming 1st to 3rd, and before the race the Africans agreed with each other how to split the total package between 3. Probably not such an infrequent scenario and given the norms of corruption in China and Kenya it's barely newsworthy. Perhaps the 70 second video story was too handy to not use.

Spot on. People who downvoted you probably still believe that Iraq has WMDs.

Tell me you don't really have any actual idea about what's going on in China and Chinese politics without telling me you don't have any actual idea about what's going on in China and Chinese politic🤦♂️
The optics aren't good but when a male pacer drops back at mile 25 (like Weldon didn when he paced Paula Radcliffe) no one freaks out.
They should have told them to drop out at the 13 mile mark.
Weldon didn't "drop back though did he? He got 'dropped'. Big difference.
At mile 25, he thought to himself, "I either need to get way ahead or drop back as I don't want to be in the photos. It's a bad look." SInce he was feeling kind of tired, he dropped back, but since he had been leading the whole thing I assume he could have gutted it out and beaten her if he had wanted to go to the well and kill himself but am not 100% certain of that.
