All top elite athletes should be way more careful towards Olympics. Definitely a boring year for us, the spectators.
Need to understand better why the cream de la cream does not want to race. They know the risks, especially when getting older and after already having WR in da pocket.
We can't even imagine for 10%, the strain on their body and mind.
Hopefully Monson will return even stronger for Tokyo Worlds next summer, then World XC in Tallahassee four months later. She may have only missed a severe hiding in Paris.

whaaat? This post does not make a lot of sense.
First paragraph. Her IG said she was on a routine run, so how do presume she was taking a risk?
Send paragraph is nonsense. She is 25 years old and an American record holder. Again, what was the risk? Her 5K the other week was fast, but within her normal reach.
Third paragraph. Maybe make sense, but needs a little explanation. The training for a new AR this spring was a high strain on body and mind, of which only 10% of us can fathom?

1. routine AFTER 10k and 5K is obviously too much, otherwise she wouldn't get injured
2. not specifically aimed on Monson, had Sidney, Sifan, Jakob an all others in mind, Monson should not be racing, maybe one, like all do
Man this sucks. Monson is 25 years old, coming off a career year. This would have been her prime Olympics. Just brutal timing.
It also means that the US will only have one woman with the Olympic 10,000m standard at the Trials: Weini Kelati. Katie Izzo is also currently in line to earn a spot based on cross country ranking but no other Americans have the 30:40 time standard.
does Parker Valby try again to get the standard or does she focus on the 5K?
It doesn't just change things for Parker Valby. This changes things for other women as well. Now that only one US woman has the 30:40 Olympic standard, I wonder if a clever meet director sets up another "The TEN" type of race, with pacers and wavelights.
“I had knee surgery two weeks before the 1984 Oly trials and won.”
Totally different injury and totally different surgery.
^ this x 100
Benoit had a portion of an inflamed plica band removed arthroscopically. The plica band is a fold of soft tissue underneath the knee. Benoit did not have cartilage or ligament damage. This is a common injury incurred by soccer players, basketball players, lacrosse players, or anyone playing a sport involving a lot of cutting and change of direction.
Monson's injury is much worse and with a much longer rehab period. The best orthopod in the world could not fix in such a way that Monson would be ready for the Olympics, let alone the trials.
Kobbs isn't known for being the sharpest knife in the drawer.
Should not be needed to ad another post, for the ones probably not understanding: Monson belongs to these best ones and should be treated as such, by her coach and herself.
This is one of the reasons it sucks that track only has their showcase event every 4 years. Any real sport has a yearly championship so injuries like this don't eliminate an athlete from the spotlight that long. No sport that let's the Olympics be their biggest championship is a real sport.

...except you have to register your meet at least 60 days in advance with both USATF and World Athletics to get your meet on the WA calendar, which means the earliest is June 13th.
Now tell me who's crazy enough to run a 10000 on June 13th AND come back for the Olympic Trials (w10000 is June 29th)?
I think it would be so awesome if they both got a spot. Seeing those two get to be team mates at their first Olympics would be so fun to watch. I know that may be a long shot, but I think it would be exciting.

Unfortunately Tuohy is injured also and has not raced, same with Morgan who had surgery. Henes and Schweizer are recovering from surgery...
Valby, Kelati, Rogers (?) May be the only top contenders that are truly healthy.
I definitely think that with Monson being out it is likely we will see more doubling. I also wonder if the US will be able to send a full 10k team?

I get what they're trying to say. We always want to see top athletes compete but in hindsight in an Olympic year, maybe they should be ensconced in bubble wrap. Of course in hindsight it's easy to say Monson shouldn't have been going for the 10,000 AR leading up to The Ten. But if everything goes right, you could say all that training for the AR preceded an amazing performance at the Olympics and that was why. The heartbreak of the Olympic cycle is also what makes it amazing when someone breaks through at the Olympics or fulfills all their well-known potential.
