Could it be that Wanders is in full training and used this race as a workout (not tapering) ??? I have faith in him. He might not hit the 10k q for olympics, but I would assume he is aiming for the marathon? Might be a stretch though.
Wanders is always "in full training". That's his main problem. He never comes fresh enough to a competition. Why? Because he trains like a world class runner* (*too much for where he stands now) and competes like a lunatic = starts way too fast the first kilometer and thereafter just fades away.
Wanders is aiming for a fast marathon in October or November, 2024. He was aiming for Paris 2024 qualifier in the 10,000, sadly not going to happen. Is the fact that he's an extreme ectomorph contributory to his ongoing health issues?
You feel for the guy because he lives road running 100% in terms of devotion to the task and a monk-like existence devoid of extra curricular activities. He is still sponsored by ASICS but how long will that continue if he does not perform as is the case right now?
No it's not his stature, it's what another poster above said, he focuses on being the best trainer in the world and is subsequently F'd on race day over and over (and goes out too fast over and over)
It's sad to watch. He thinks his extreme approach to running makes him more professional but it is more like a compulsive disorder.
After one of his recent poor races he posted himself running (not slowly) on a treadmill that very evening. Then he ran again very early the next morning before flying back to Kenya.
He trains far too hard and thinks that his poor form means he needs to then train even harder still.
He does silly things like wake up super early to do a shake out before a morning workout again because he views it as being hyper professional. But the true professionals are maximising their recovery.
I'm a huge fan of his so it is quite painful to watch him consistently self sabotage.

Be that as it may he was training very hard five years ago in 2019 and hit some fabulous times including 13:13, 27:17, 59:13, so if the training worked for him then why would it not work for him now?
His present Swiss coach who was his former coach in Switzerland and in his first years in Kenya, is redirecting his training to run slower in practice most of the time but does Julien obey these directives that is the ❓. Julien seems to be a type A personality.
Isn’t 29:30 a bad tempo run for young? Even assuming training through and some travel lag. Maybe there was some appearance money/opportunity to see the Paris course but that just looks bad
Before the trials they did 8 mile 'marathon predictor' at a 4:40 average, which would split a 29:10 10k. But I don't think there's reason to panic, many times he has raced poorly and then suddenly wins a USATF circuit race. He seems to get in shape fast after figuring out his injury issues.
