Bullis High School 400m sensation Quincy Wilson debuts in the 800m at the Myrtle Beach Beach Run Invitational winning in 1:50.44.Watch more from the meet: ww...
I'm underwhelmed by this 1:50 as well. Alan Webb ran what...a :47 in the 400m? And a 1:43 800m. I'm not saying Wilson should not be able to run 1:39 eventually or anything like that. But for me to be surprised, I would need to see him run a 1:46. This kid has amond the best ever wheels, among the best ever 600m time, and he's much more grounded that Cade Flatt.I see the Obea Moore comparisons getting thrown around. Nah. Obea was ganster. He's more like William Reed.
Does anyone know that this race wasn’t just strength work for Wilson? I would not be surprised if his coach put 1:50 out there as the goal, and for Quincy to run even splits. It can be hard for a teen of his talent to hold back, but I think he did.
And as already mentioned, Wilson is likely to keep growing. Compared to a lot of 400m specialists he looks very small. With Wilson a couple inches taller and some more muscle, he’s going to be a monster.

Wow
you guys are tough graders?
1:50 for a HS soph who has rarely run the distance
wow, in the old days I would say get a clue, you think he should run 1:46?
1:46.62 was 9th in Indoors NCAA this past year
i was surprised by this, I inew about the 600m , he had shown nothing like this
its very early April fir goodness sakes
Ppl being unimpressed by this effort is bonkers especially considering how he ran it 😭😭😭
he runs 45.7. He should be able to run 1:50 in practice.
would you lose your minds in a similar way if a 1:45 guy ran a 4:10 mile?

AW split a 47.7ish as a senior on 4x4 - open was 49 - his 143.84 was at age 24. QW is 16... AW ran 406.9 sophomore record but I'm not sure what his 800m time was - I want to say 1:53 but can't remember for sure.
this guy is insane to watch, crazy talent. what do you guys think.
I'm not an expert on non Bekele distances but 1:50 is literally 55 seconds per lap, which is 10 seconds slower than his 400m PB. He would be finding the first ridiculously easy. A final lap in 55 seconds might be a bit of an effort but not a huge one

im sure you've put in the time to imagine what Bekele was capable of had he dedicated a year to the event. If Aouita was capable of 1:43.8, Bekele must have been good for a second better.
The kids basically the fastest ever for his age at 400m and you want him to be an 800 guy?
he seems similarly talented as Obea Moore who ran 45.1x/1:49 as a sophomore. Hopefully he pans out unlike Obea
I want everyone who is that good to be an 800 guy because without this kind of talent in the 800, we'll never really know how fast humanity can really get...
There are so many humans who can run WAAAAY faster than 50 seconds in the 400m but no human has ever existed who could run two of those back to back.
Sub-1:40 is like the white whale of track and field. It is like the sub-4 minute mile of the next generation... Can it be done? Will it ever be done? Some say no. I'd like to see it happen.
Who knows because the best athletes aren’t run it. It’s usually the event in HS that you put the pretty slow person who can’t run a mile either.

I don’t think this is true—maybe at your high school, but not generally. All events count for the same points, and college scouts like 800 runners for their versatility, so coaches and athletes aren’t saying “Ah, who cares about that ‘tweener distance, it’s not in vogue.” Most top milers will run their share of 800s, and many 200/400 kids who crush over-distance workouts and aren’t gassed at the end of 400s will eventually give the 800 a go. Athletes tend to gravitate toward the event they’re best suited to.
This is even more true at more advanced levels. In 4 years of college racing, do you think an athlete who could run 1:45 in the 800 is going to insist on running 46.x 400s because the 800 is hard?—do you think a 1:45/3:59 guy is going to run the mile because the 800 isn’t cool? Beyond that, is a guy who could be an Olympic champion at 800 going to prefer being a perennial semifinalist in the adjacent events? Of course not.
The idea that there are a bunch of potential 1:41, 1:40, 1:39 800 talents running the sprints instead is silly. The best 800m runners in the world are the most talented 800m runners in the world. There could be some potential 44 & 1:43 guys out there, and maybe Quincy Wilson will be one of them. If he ever runs 43.xx open though, I think it’s safe to say that’s his best event.
