I agree. My company used them on a major project for about 18 months. They were mostly 25 year olds with MBAs who were arrogant and ended up ticking everyone off.
I can't speak for every consulting firm ever out there, but I know the very large organization I work with hires these types of consultants and they're universally loathed here. They're constantly causing more headaches than they solve. My understanding is that they're paying for an "insurance policy." I can give a good, recent example.
- About a year ago all the chatgpt stuff started going crazy
- Our developers started playing around with variations on LLMs to experiment
- Corporate leaders sent out a big video memo saying, "DO NOT USE THESE, WE HAVE TO THINK BEFORE WE DO ANYTHING.
- Consultants were brought on for 6 months
- Corporate leaders sent out another big video memo saying, "OKAY YOU CAN USE THESE, JUST BE CAREFUL."
- Consultants were essentially paid millions to tell them, "LLMS/AI will be important but there are security concerns that need to be considered."
- Every single software-adjacent employee knew the above, BUT, corporate leadership views consultants as being "on the hook" if something goes awry
