It seems like a dumb decision. Years ago I went on a "free" weekend at a place and sat through an hour sales pitch. It was sort of still going when I started to make my way out with my GF. A guy sort of stopped us as if it was not over yet. I said the sales guy just said "that's all I have. Any questions." so yeah it's over. Then he directs me out a way that was different than we came in. I thought nothing of it.
We go into another room where another sales guy is there who asks what can he do to get us to sign. We said we would think on it (we lied). Then he says something like "well I only have a few extra perks and discounts that I can offer". My GF (she was quick) said "how often does that sales BS work". We start out and again sort of get stopped with another pitch. Finally I say that we have met our requirement to attend this sales pitch per the offer for the free weekend and we are leaving. The guy keeps at us. I escalate: hey my brother is an attorney I would really hate to have to call him to see what I need to do to get out of here. I then get a "oh you are free to leave at anytime we just want to get you a good deal".
Later we talked to another couple who had a similar experience. Their twist was at the point I invoked my brother, the guy in that couple pulled out his badge (he was a detective) and asked if they really want to illegally detain him in violation of whatever the statute was. The sales guy turned white.
As for being legal: well both parties sign a contract and unless you can prove some sort of fraud you are stuck.
