I’d expect my brother to help me just like I would help him in that situation. One person doesn’t stand a chance against a mountain lion, but two could at least try to keep it at bay. Running to get help does no good if your brother is dead by the time the help arrives. Strength in numbers. Stay and fight alongside your brother until the very end.
Did they really lose to that cute putty cat? Who's a good putty cat?who's a good putty cat? I would maybe struggle with an African lion, a tiger or a leopard before fighting them off, but not that little fella.
Where does it say anything about shed hunting? Do you know something from another article?
I have trail run and hiked past guys cutting antlers, ears and tails off of dead deer. Mountain lions attack to protect their food and young. Ogle the dead deer at your own risk.

Maybe a pretty young cub. So cute, until mommy tells you it is not a toy.

They were shed hunting. I'm sure you city folks don't know what that means but it doesn't have anything to do with a dead deer.

I'd definitely like to think I'd go down swinging (and that he would do the same), but I guess you never know...
This times 1000! There is no way I'd be biking, hiking, running or anything else in the woods without a 9mm me ready to fire. Too many dangers that can't simply be ignored, it's your life.
Sure, while your back is turned you will pull out your weapon and slay the beast that is in stealth mode and about to strike you from behind. The teeth will latch on to your neck. Your weapon will remain untouched.
These boys were antler hunting. It seems they decided to cut antlers of a dead deer. A dead dear that the mountain lion killed and was staying close to while it protected its kill. These two most certainly had knives with them ... did them no good.
Sure, there's 2 guys and one of them couldn't have shot the thing.
You have ZERO clue about whether it came from behind them or not.
And lastly, you've got some major insecurity issue, but that's your problem, not mine little guy.

American for sure. You guys stand out like a sore thumb with your gun obsessions. Its the cats territory not yours. If youre going to kill wild animals just to get a bike ride in, maybe its better to cycle or jog at your local park. You can still carry your gun there to protect yourself against packs of squirrels and rogue pigeons.
Sometimes family or friends can fight the beast off, sometimes they can’t, all just like in the wild in nature. Big cats are way too strong for their size.
‘Fight, flight, or freeze, they say, and these women fought. One had a two-inch knife and used it to stab the wild cat – to little avail. Cyclist Annie Bilotta, 64, tried to choke the cat. “That was like choking a rock,” she said. “It did absolutely nothing.”’
There are precautions that can be taken to reduce the risk of these kinds of outcomes. Bear Spray is one and I have bought some and bring it along, and it comes with a holster worn on the outside of your coat or jacket for quick retrieval should you need it,
Another thing is a Compact Satellite Communicator, and we got one of those also which works to send interactive SOS alerts anytime, globally. It is not dependent on cell phone coverage areas. It is a completely separate stand alone device, and we got the Garmin inReach® Mini Lightweight and Compact Satellite Communicator. A device like that may have made the difference between life and death in situations like this and others.
I'm shocked that our robust population of Sasquatch didn't cause the extinction of these unruly creatures thousands of years ago (by ripping them to pieces).
ok, look, even if you don't have a weapon, all you really need is to understand cat psychology.
A cat will decide to be passive or aggressive based on your body posture. Be tall, act like you might attack at any second, take advantage of any sign of weakness to intimidate it.
Lions can be cowed by hyenas or even enough jackals on the wild serengeti. They will lie down and let them have the kill. Tigers can be stymied by a forked stick in the hands of a skilled trainer. Do what you can to trip them up, confuse them, befuddle them. Show them who's the predator and who's just a cat.
Yell your head off too, cats understand a blood-curdling battle scream.
My post asking if Rich in CA was okay gets deleted, but Rich in CA constantly calling us 'fa..g..gots' is acceptable?
i used to feel confronted and dehumanised by rich in CA's abuse but now i wear it like a badge of honour. sort of like when a pigeon craps on you from the sky. all those open fields and concrete rooftops and he chose me.
in Matthew 24:7-8 it is written that the second of coming of christ shall be marked by signs in the sun moon and stars. that fig trees will bud and lions will roar and rich in CA will abuse you on letsrun.com

it depends if the cat has cubs or not. most wild cats protecting their young will attack you no matter how big you make yourself look. your best chance in those circumstances is to run as far away as fast as you can so the cat sees you as less of a threat.
I always dream of a mountain lion attacking me and my dog. I know I could fight it off. Someone would get a phone recording of it and I’d be all over the news beating a mounting lion up. I come across coyotes pretty often and I charge them and they run away because they know I’m a professional UFC fighter. A mountain lion would be no challenge for me. I’d step aside and break its ribs then snap all four legs before it can bite me. Easy peasy.

Deadhead antler hunting is illegal unless the local game warden/ranger inspects the head and grants you a permit to take it. Deadhead means antlers still attached to the skull, regardless of how old it is. Recently dead, or died long ago, it makes no difference.
Antler hunters would be wise to stay away from buck deadheads. Those are almost always in mountain lion hunting territory … unlike single fallen antlers which can be most anywhere else that deer graze.
Mountain lion attacks are rare. Rangers and wardens will investigate to see what actually happened that lead to the attack because it circumstances are not just a hiker or runner, it was people looking for something that leads then to go off trails.
