Pretty underwhelming race. Was waskom hurt at some point in the season?
Unsure…he had a bad race leading into NCAAs but that happened last year too. Today it just looked like he couldn’t find a spot and wasted a ton of energy.
Shows you the trickiness of this race that Waskom looked completely out of his depth out there even with lots of experience. Gary Martin notably was in trouble throughout. Khan and Sahlman definitely really fit but got rebuffed/outmaneuvered a lot.
I like Gary Martin always have but... he creates his iwnnracing luck a bit
if you are going to go three wide earlier in the race that has to be a move that gets you to the top or you are prepared to carry pretty far
he did not , ducked back in and got bumped and down goes Frazier!!
A Shame but there were a few 101 type mistakes by a few
you should get points not only for winning but an extra point for every second under 4 minutes you run. it'll stop these slow tactical races. frustrating to watch a bunch of guys who are capable of running a 3:50 mile run like this. it'll also stop the bunching up which leads to falls if everyone is going all out.
2:08 is ridiculous! Seven of the guys out there should be embarrassed that they qualified for the finals and then made zero effort to win.
It's more complicated that that. Even if someone doesn't have the best kick in the field it doesn't mean they maximize their expected finish position by leading.
That said, people do over-estimate the strategic cost of leading indoors

The fallacy that a slow race is a strategic race needs to die. There is a very, very fine line behind strategic and pathetic. This was the latter.
No one cares about the time, the win is all that matters
I agree. But seven of the guys out there made zero effort to win. They sat behind the leaders and were hoping for… what exactly? A meteorite to take out Houser?

I’m not paying for espn+ so I didn’t watch the race but someone that came 2nd at the US National Championships has no excuse for coming 8th at NCAAs unless he has been dealing with an injury.
