I just threw that out there. It would be shocking to see anyone run that time, particularly if they plan to race again the following day.
15:14.18 still stands as the fastest of any women at the NCAA indoor championships, set by Kim Smith in 2004. (Smith also won the 3000m that year.)
Valby doesn’t need to get the Olympic std in the indoor season. She has the outdoor season and many other pro races to get the std and make the team. Her concern is beating Markezich and hopefully winning the team title over Ark.

One would think one or several of the CA meets in late March/April will gather a few looking for the standard in the 5000.
I cannot remember the last time the 1500m/mile world record holder on the men's or women's side has been the 3000m world record holder except maybe one of the Chinese dopers in the 1990s. (Jakob has a chance to be the next). So, being a better miler isn't necessarily going to give you the victory, though the miler moving up to the 5000m does often win easily in slower and sometimes fast races (Aouita won gold in 1984 in the 5000m and then became the first under 13, as well as 1500m record holder later on).
Are the DMR lists final? I wonder if Roe is really going to triple or if they will put someone else in
Last year, many of the dmr teams field their “b” teams due to the conflict in the 800m/mile prelims. If Roe doesn’t run, look for Jepkirui to also not run.

Genzebe Dibaba current indoor mile, 3k, 5k record holder
Only ND women have completely shown their hand in the DMR so far with Markezich scratching the mile. It's hard to tell who's running it for the men or women in most cases at this point. On the men's side assuming, he's healthy, I would expect McMahon-Staggs to anchor for UW with his scratch in the mile and Waksom and Green to possibly run the 1200 and the 800 after their prelims. No other high ranking miler scratched without a 5000 time and a team qualification in the DMR.
Markezich & Valby both have more to give in the 3000, IMHO. How much more, I don't know.
Markezich's 3000 PR is 8:40.42 while Valby's is 8:42.29. I once read somewhere that a 3000 Steeplechase time is probably equivalent to what one would run in the 2 mile. If that is entirely accurate, I am not sure. I don't know how that figure was derived or where it came from. Markezich's steeple PR is 9:17.93 so if that conversion is accurate, that would put her 3000 time in the ballpark of 8:36ish. That seems reasonable to me. The steeple time was from last July and Markezich seems to be in great form now so it would not surprise me at all if she is capable of getting close to 8:30 or, at the very least, under 8:35.
I keep saying that with PV races too, but she hasn't been sat nor kicked by anyone in a long time. Keep waiting for it to happen since 2022 XC?
PV straight to sharp end of the field and will pulverize her.
I think this applies more to the 5K on the track. The 3k may be short enough that someone like Markezich (who has already run an 8:40) may think they can hang with her. The longer the race is the less likely someone is going to feel comfortable going out at Valby's pace.
