While I think the cost of college is ABSURD, and 100% think moving forward that student loan debt = should be eligible to be discharged in bankruptcy, I don't understand how in the world what Biden has done is legal.
The Supreme Court already ruled Biden's previous student loan debt was illegal. Can someone with a law background - not some left or right wing hack - please explain why this version of it might be legal? It just seems to me it's a desperate attempt to bribe young voters.
Congress is supposed to be in charge of the purse. How in the world can Biden do this?
2) George W. Bush gave out a tax rebate to all Americans leading up to election.
3) Donald Trump broke with tradition and instead of having the signature of the Treasury Department Head on the checks he sent out, he had HIS name...the egotistical Donald J. Trump on those checks. THAT'S the most pandering I've ever seen from a President...I mean, OF COURSE IT IS!
Not a bribe. A very real policy and stance that Biden and many other Democrats (I'm not 100% on board, but I do see some merit) are for.
You're dead wrong on this.
But of course in regards to 1) a campaign issue can be a “bribe” in the sense Rojo is using the word. After all, that is partially why we have a huge federal debt because politicians bribe us with entitlements and lower taxes.
Is it like trump bribing the wealthy through tax reforms he passed?
While I agree with the sentiment as I feel the country is largely screwed as both parites do bribe their supporters, I think it's important to note that Trump didn't do anything. THat was a tax law passed by Congress that he signed.
The Founders gave the power of the purse to Congress for a reason. Don't take my word for it, go to the democratic website - democrats-budget.house . gov and you'll see this:
The Constitution gave the power of the purse – the nation’s checkbook – to Congress. The Founders believed that this separation of powers would protect against monarchy and provide an important check on the executive branch.
In the first Biden proposal, the court also invoked the so-called "major questions" doctrine in part of its ruling, a legal theory that holds there must be clear congressional authorization for an executive branch agency to decide an issue of "vast economic or political significance."
The "economic and political significance" of the loan forgiveness plan, Roberts wrote, "is staggering by any measure." The court ruled that the education secretary could modify "existing statutory or regulatory provisions" under the Education Act, but "not to rewrite that statute from the ground up."
By paring down the size of the requirements, the administration hopes that the new rules are merely a modification. $1.2 billion is "small" relative to the $1.77 trillion outstanding.
I expect the ruling to be challenged in court and may reach the Supreme Court.
I always reminded that journalists tend not to scale numbers. $1.2 billion is large in absolute terms, but as a fraction of the amount outstanding it is small.

If you want to call all campaign promises bribes, then I'll disagree, but I can see that point. Rojo is calling out one specific thing and asking if it's "legal," so he's not making a philosophical statement here. It's not a bribe.
The lower taxes thing is always ridiculous. We should not lower taxes until we get a handle on our national debt, and that will likely never happen. I will take a defensive stance on what you refer to as "entitlements" until you define those. Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid are definitely NOT entitlements as we pay into those systems. Perhaps needs to be overhauled, made more sleek, and I for one am all for extending the ages at which dispersements can be made since we are living longer than when the current ages were set, but they are NOT entitlements.

Yep, this is pretty blatant corruption and fraud. There's no other way to honestly evaluate it, really. Rojo, I know you like to fence sit, but the left wingers really are the bad guys on most topics of import. They're pro-crime, pro-genital mutilation of minors, pro-Marx, etc.
This whole thing really is explainable via the Marxist worldview. These student loan borrowers are oppressed, you see. When they were 18 and faced with working their way through college, going to a CC, or some other option less than the 4 year summer camp version reserved for children of wealthy people, they squealed and shrieked with anger. They filled out their FAFSA forms as quickly as they could and took out those loans, public and/or private, with the idea it would all be worth it.
They went to college and enjoyed a hedonistic lifestyle. Partying, casual sex, lounging on campus, the meal plan, the whole deal. Then they graduated and began working some crummy entry level job for somewhere between $35-50k a year. All of a sudden, it was time to pay back the loan. Paying hundreds of dollars a month and not making much of a dent on the principal begins to weigh on them psychologically. They get bitter, angry, and resentful and when you're like this, you rationalize anything and everything.
I'm honestly not surprised. The weak, shifty, dishonest, and entitled criminality on display is exactly what drives the more traditional criminals that these people support with their politics. You can all hoot and holler all you want, you're still scumbag criminals at the end of the day destined for miserable lives. Think about it, your partner, your family, and your friends are just as nasty and awful as you are. That hole you felt and always feel, your anger, your envy, it will ALWAYS be there, no matter how much you steal. And you all deserve it.
the part you folks are confused about is someone who has been paying for 10 years has likely already paid their loan principal once. do you get "interest?" because of interest we pay our student loans multiple times to get one acknowledged full payment of principal.
i have zero issue with biden saying one trip through your loan is sufficient. the pretense that people have done nothing is a fib. you do not get this relief unless you are paying and have paid for years.
the right wing has a basic numeracy issue. that and if we called this a "tax" they would hate it. but they like sticking it to libs.
Rojo, you are freaking embarrassing. Allegedly went to an Ivy League school yet all you ask her stupid ass questions that could be answered by quick Google search. You claim to be some libertarian, but you’re right wing hack.

They dipstick left wingers funded and created this medium that you used to disparage them.
“left wingers” are the creative people, the scientists, the people who move the world in better directions.
People like you are the takers, the whiners and complainers
You know what is most unfair about all this? Asking people who didn't go to college to foot the bill of those who went and still failed. I think if Biden is a nice guy that he says he is he should make a one time tax credit for those who didn't go to college. They never bought onto this college degree racket. They shouldn't have to put a penny of their tax dollars towards it.

The tax reforms bribe for the wealthy, to use terms in your lexicon, dates to 2017 and is referred to as the Trump-GOP tax law because it originated with Trump and was passed by the then GOP Congress.
