when was the last time centro ran sub-4 in january? skimming his WA profile I see 2017, 2016, 2015. idk if he's gonna be ready for indoor worlds (though I'm not putting it past him), but if he stays healthy, he'll be top 6 at the trials.

I think Centro has a better shot at making the team and hitting a OQ mark if someone beefs him and pisses him off. It’ll give him that extra rage to do his thing. Someone should do it. Centro really set the stage for this younger generation of American milers (including Engels when he was at his peak). It would be pretty cool to see his petty, stubborn, tactical, talented a** go out strong.
You mean when Engels peaked with tenth at worlds? It’s so weird all the Engels fans try and act like it’s a rivalry between him and Centro. Craig should try beating Colin Sahlman first
Of the current top 16 (current NCAA qualifiers) in the mile, 9 are from three schools, four from UW, three from NAU, two from BYU. OK State's Brian Musau is in the top 16 by .01. OK State has a second Kenyan freshman just about a half second out in 3:56, Laban Kipkemboi, but get this, his first completed race for OK State, this month in Arkansas as well, was a 4:03, in fifth place! He dropped seven seconds, with both races near sea level, mind you, in two weeks. Is he the same Laban Kipkemboi (listed at 21 years old) who ran 1:59 800m in 2022, 8:31 3k/8:52 steeple, and 14:27 5000m, plus a far, far better 1:02:29 half in 2023?
You are probably too young to remember the late Paul McMullen. Paul was out of shape for his standards I believe in spring 2001 and ran a 3:48 for 1500m. Under the guidance of the great former Michigan coach Ron Warhurst, 6 weeks later he ran 3:33 for 1500m. Centro is a lot like Paul, as give him a few weeks and he can improve drastically. Centro KNOWS how to peak. The time to run fast is not late January and a seasoned vet like Centro knows that. Let's see what he does June until August before we judge...
If you’re thinking Centro can make the team, he doesn’t have a chance. He would need to be in near PR shape to do so, and that’s not going to happen at age 35.
Centro is toast. The HS kids on this site still kiss his butt and can't see the truth.
That guy is super fit right now and probably favorite for the mile.
Centro 14th in 3:59. Ouch! Can we finally get an official "He's done" thread?
He ran 4:04 at the Hawaii mile so that’s an improvement. I remember an interview from him last year at nationals how he went from 1:56 800m to 1:48 by the end of the season in 2023. He’s another year past his injury so let’s see what happens

Nike's Matthew Centrowitz runs 3:37.36 in the 1500m prelim at the 2023 USATF Outdoor Championships to place sixth in the first heat and advance to the final ...
How old is Luke Houser cannot find a date anywhere? Thanks
Same age as Waskom. They graduated from HS either 2018 or 2019? They should be almost out of eligibility. Though COVID and redshirt season so they probably have another 2 years.

With less than a year to go before the trials, Paul could barely break 4:40 in the mile.

In 2023 he had the same start. He ran a number of unimpressive efforts in Australia and had an unimpressive outdoor season. I enjoyed the Matt Centrowitz era as much as anyone but there is no evidence to suggest he’ll be a factor at the US Trials.
I don't think Centro is done, but I think he will be at the end of the season. Some weird comments about him moving up to the 5km. He would never do that - He's just like Nick Willis, a pure miler.

This strategy works a lot better when you're 28 like McMullen was, not 35, coming off injury and on the tail end of your career like Centro.

I agree with the sentiment, mainly that he would never be competitive at the top level moving up now age 35. But don't forget about his 13:00 time trial a few years back, it was very solid, so the idea of him moving up a few years ago wasn't completely outlandish,
Those early January birthdays with Kenyan athletes are awfully common. January 10, 2000 in this case, making him 24, with a 3:42 1500m pr five years ago and now he runs 3:56 for the mile (about a four second pr, equivalent to 3:38.5 1500m). I don't know where Dave is getting these guys.
