In my perfect scenario, Kiptum achieves sub 2 but Kipchoge three peats at the Olympics.
That would be priceless around here. One rain dance after another.
Imagine a forum fixated on time but worshipping Kipchoge forced to deal with one guy as significantly faster but the other guy owning all the hardware.

you are taking crazy pills but you're also dumb - rough combo
This whole thing is a complete farce. How can we continue to pretend that it’s not? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.
you will never be able to enjoy track/running if you keep that mindset. but one argument i would make for the possibility (not likelihood, just a possibility) of the sport being pretty clean nowadays, is that a lot of records still stand from the late 90s/early 2000s, including marquee records like the 1500/mile.
If doping so were widespread nowadays, the doping, coupled with the crazy advances in shoe tech + general training/nutrition improvements.. would mean those records would be shattered no?? like jakob is over a second behind el guerrouj's 1500m pr and he is DUSTING fields in the non-championship events. how are these guys not running 3:23 if everyone is doping.
now jakob != kiptum and the 1500 != the marathon but either way i just enjoy the sport for what it is. curious to hear why you think kiptum is an outlier doper or if it's just widespread & he's still the best
Agreed! I love this boldness and I wish that Americans would embrace this attitude.
They won't. Why go for it when you can convince yourself that running a 2:12 is a solid debut. Then, let's find a course that is conducive to breaking 2:10 but also gives me some money. After that, I'll try to finagle a trip to a really fast European race in hopes of getting a 2:09. By age 38, if all goes right, I might be in a position to drop a 2:06 on the world! (Meanwhile, WR has progressed to 1:58:46 and even hilly New York requires a 2:03 clocking to sniff the podium.)
Could you imagine a left hander with 102 mph velocity committing to a decade long stint in the minors or a Heisman QB opting to skip the NFL Draft to hone his skills in the XFL first? That's American distance running for you! Minor league mentality.
Lance Armstrong had this type of special quality too!

Completely wrong, people like myself would actually like the sport to be clean and where the most talented win!
Guys i have no idea on what is happening in Rotterdam (i do not believe to a Sub 2h) but i'm sure Kiptum is not going to win the Olympic Marathon in Paris. It is an hilly course, he never ran an hilly marathon while there are many experienced runners in that kind of course such as Tola, Geay and Benson Kipruto. Tamirat Tola is my top 1 favourite for the gold medal.
I wrote a lett to Track and Field News, which was published in the letter to the editor section in the early 90 about this very issue. Americans were afraid then to even train with other top Americans, much less the best in the world...even if they shared the same sponsor, coach, etc... With very few exceptions, it hasn't gotten any better over the last 30 years
