Never ran for a team in college but I was a very good high school runner and decent marathoner during and after college. I quit running for a lot of my mid-late 20s and early 30s while getting into powerlifting and just doing other things.
I’m now late 30s and trying to get back at it by starting with a half marathon. Do I wish I had tried to see what I was more capable of in my younger years when I was more in my prime? Sure. But that’s because I’m motivated NOW for running. During that time, I wasn’t. I recognize that to have forced myself to try and reach arbitrary goals would have lead to a more miserable life and wouldn’t have been conducive to hitting the goals anyway. Hell, I even tried it a few times and became more miserable in life and running alike.
You can always come back to it if you want to. It’s still fun making a comeback even if you aren’t chasing your best times. Or maybe your comeback IS to chase your best times or try a new goal entirely. You’re still plenty young to quit and find it again later down the road without missing much. Trust that from someone who has lived the 16+ years that you haven’t yet.
My best advice is to do whatever you want to do, but stay fit and active. Not by distance runner standards, but just by healthy human being standards. Keep running a few times a week for fun. Ski, hike, lift, even just walk or do yoga. That way if you ever do feel a fire burning again somewhere, you’ve kept your teeth sharp enough to explore it.
