Several weeks ago I was looking for something in my teammate's room at a party. Found a couple foil bags with pills inside. They were labeled but not like a real prescription so I thought they were recreational. Searched the names and apparently they were anabolics.
I've been angry for a while. Haven't told anyone and don't know what to do. This is our top runner who is popular with my teammates and coach. Snitching seems uncool to do to a teammate and could backfire. If I confront them I might get iced out anyway especially since I was being nosy in the first place.
Having a hard time with motivation knowing that the teammate who's had the best results with our coach's training is likely doping. Their performances have taken off in the past year. I wish the ncaa would follow through on their policies and fork over the money for real drug testing.
Don’t do anything stupid triggered by your emotions. Fast people cheat, fast people also don’t cheat.
Here is USADA’s tip center contact info:
to send a tip, drop the person’s name and address/ school. Choose at least one of the options. Don’t be afraid, these contacts are there for a reason.
I would talk to your coach, don’t be afraid. It’s the coaches job to deal with the burden of following up properly. I know a guy & girl who are cheating, they run for a big time school, both raced at NCAA’s this past fall. I don’t think they’ve ever been tested through the NCAA. It’s the way it is man, they also know how to get by tests at their international races. Best of luck!
This honestly makes me sad.
I didn't think OP was a troll either when I first read it or now, which makes me sadder.
I've heard doping is rampant in college too because there is no testing. And that does make me question a lot of performances.
I'm so sick of questioning performances. I'm so sick of seeing performances I don't have to question at all, but nothing gets done. I wonder how many frozen samples from 2016 will come back positive, good ol' 2016 when I believed that there were people who were clean running.
Maybe because I'm old and gray, but if you're doping as young as college, where on earth are you finding the joy in what you're doing? is the scholarship, or the accolades really worth that kind of cheating? OP didn't specify how fast this athlete is. I guess if this individual is on her way to a pro contract that's one thing, but like doping to win a conference title is ridiculous.
Anyways, yes, good that you contacted the anti doping agency. I would still talk to the coach if I were you. Doping isn't just cheating. it has health risks too. the coach needs to know what's going on so they can help, although if they are in on it, that's another story.

NCAA athletes have to sign a testing consent form and have anti doping education every year. WADA and NCAA banned lists are similar. If the policy was enforced there would be no issue. The issue is they only care about the appearance of anti doping for PR purposes. Does anyone know a college distance runner who got busted by the NCAA and not WADA or USADA?

At a podium level school many years ago a lesser talented runner tested positive in an NCAA random test. It was because a poppy seed bagel they ate.
The U.S. Defense Department issued a memo on Feb. 17, 2023, warning service members to avoid eating poppy seeds because doing so may result in a positive urine…
From my experience as a college athlete, we only got tested if we made NCAAs and it was routinely three days or so before that and even then I think it was by our school so not sure if everyone had to do that. There was no post championship test as far as I know, no test if you won something or PR'd. The NCAA random tests are few and far between and many, including myself, never got tested. I say this because it emphasizes the point that it is so easy to get away with it if you really wanted to dope in the NCAA. So I totally believe this story.
College distance running = prison rules. Snitches get stitches. If you say anything to anyone, your next trail run with the team could easily turn into the "squeal like a pig" scene from Deliverance... and Burt Reynolds won't be showing up with his bow and arrow to rescue you.

You shouldn't worry about it because we have it on expert advice on these threads that athletes only "believe" doping will help them and there's no proof it does outside a placebo effect.
Are we talking about ncaa distance running here or sprints? Distance running is the sport no one cares about right? I can say with a very high confidence, none of the top distance ncaa runners are doping. At least none of the Americans.

It is because Americans (the WASP derived anyway) have a higher moral standard than non-Americans - everyone knows that!

Obvious troll, your regarded teammate is using easily detectable and basically worthless anabolics.

Best thing to do is mind your own business. If he is good enough, he will eventually get drug tested. I would stay out of it. A few years back I got nailed for a misdemeanor and the being that I am a fed the judge decided a couple of weeks in lock up would teach me a lesson because he as stated I should know better. While I was locked up, I saw a few inmates gang up and beat the crap out of another inmate and take his possessions when I was asked by the deputies who did it, I said I was honestly asleep and did not see anything. Had I got involved I probably would have been next on their list, and I was also trying to keep my occupation silent also? Easily put they eventually figured out who did the assault, and I didn't need to snitch for them to figure it out. My thoughts you rat your teammate out and prematurely start the downfall of his life it could bring more issues for you from not only the teammate but possibly the coaches also.
I'm reporting her to the anti doping agency in her home country (yes, I'm on a women's team, I left that out trying to avoid LRC snark which I got anyway). They allow fully anonymous reporting through a chat and give a case number to check back. Safer than dealing with ncaa coach and teammate drama. Only drawback is they'd publish her name after a positive test which is harsh for her age.
I appreciate those who attempted to be helpful. The rest of you, thanks for reminding me why I never post here and why no one takes college doping seriously. I hope this is at least helpful for anyone going through something similar.

I admire the "I'm a woman" detail to try to make it more believable, but still clearly troll.
Contiversial opinion here, but I would probably not turn my teammate in over this situation. If he gets caught in a drug test (which is pretty likely, they are random and very thorough), so be it. However, I just wouldn't have it in me to ruin my friend's life. So many NCAA teams are already "cheating" anyway with 25 year old totally wasn't pro before foreigner freshman, 7th years, guys who aren't taking any real classes, ect. it's hard for me to fault someone for turning to drugs in a desperate moment. If you know him well enough, I would have a personal intervention mainly for his own health.
I would never do it myself, out of both moral convictions and the very real possibility of side effects, but the time I have spent in the NCAA has really blackpilled me so to speak and given me some sympathy for those who do turn down that path.
Being a D1 runner can feel pretty thankless, especially if you aren't on a distance based team. We train 365 days a year, weekends, Christmas ect, and have no real off season (our off season ironically involves generally the most amount of miles). Unlike other sports where you can kind of mess around during the Summer and Winter, every mile you run is tracked and scrutinized even on school breaks, and there's the constant anxiety of getting behind. Furthermore, we often get shafted with scholarship money and race trips. The sport has essentially become one of time trialing, so if your team isn't willing to send you to the few meets a year with a really solid 5k-10k field and environment (Boston, Stanford, Bryan Clay, ect.) your chances of getting a solid race in is very low. Meanwhile you're watching the rich get richer as full scholarship gymnastics, football, and basketball athletes bring in six figures of NIL money.
This is not to complain or justify doping, but this board sometimes has a romanticized view of what D1 running is actually like. I still love it and am fortunate to have an awesome coach and teammates, but the stress in less optimal situations can drive even the most bright eyed and optimistic high school kids into a pretty dark place. OP, I would be worried about your teammates mental health first, and then the doping. Check in on your friends.
