Since it's been determined a super shoe isn't a good idea for someone walking with a cane, this thread has been closed to new posts. If you want to help Rojo find Aunt Betty the best walking shoe, chime in here:
I think it's a terrible idea, unless maybe you don't like her. The farther off the ground a shoe takes you the less stable it is. The less stable a shoe is the easier it is to lose your balance when you're wearing it and that increases the risk of falling. And the idea behind all those shoes is they bring improved performance. So she'll finally get under fifteen minutes around the block and achieve a dream she's had since she was 75? Get her a gift card from Famous Footwear and let her find something she likes.
As usual HRE is right. I took a fall back in August and dislocated my shoulder. Took ten weeks before I had reasonable motion of the arm. Anything that puts her at risk could turn into a major medical crisis.
Quit thinking so much rojo. Seriously.
Thanks for that. I wonder if maybe you don't need to get to old age to get a real understanding of what a predator gravity can be. I took a fall last February and either broke or badly bruised a rib and it was excruciating for a few days and then just fairly painful for a couple more weeks. You probably remember Don McGregor from the '72 Olympic Marathon etc. He died from a fall a few years back. And breaking a hip when you fall when you're old is what often begins the tolling of your funeral bell. I cannot think of any kind of upside to having an 80 year old woman who already has at least a bit of a mobility issue wearing super shoes.
I've stopped being surprised at the level of these posts, but the specific content is still amazing. Either a complete moran, looking to collect an inheritance, or both.

I’m sorry about the fall, are you okay?
Thanks. The pain mostly ended after 10-11 weeks. That was about the time I could put on a shirt without struggle. Funny thing, when I was in college I had a fall the week of nationals, rolled over on the arm so that it was popped out of socket Mel Gibson style. After sitting in shock for about a minute I grabbed the shoulder and jerked it back in place. Painful, but I managed to finish 20th five days later. But I was a strapping young buck then. Not so much now.

That's harsh. I think that this rash of inane threads that rojo starts only proves that he has Irish blood in him. I live in a heavily Irish neighborhood. The one thing I learned about my people is there's no filter between the Irish brain and the Irish tongue.
There is a fecund stream of random thoughts that flows through rojo's mind, but some reason rojo thinks that he needs to share them all with the world.
See the picture from the link that DanM put up. If anything, rojo should get Aunt Betty a badass walking stick. She would think that boy is a thoughtful young man.

This.
Falls are the #1 cause of injury deaths after age 65. Further, many seniors never recover from a fall. My 91 year-old MIL fell, broke her leg, and was dead in less than a week. Her heart couldn't handle complications from the pain meds.
Super shoes aren't stable when standing. It's not just the stack height. It's common to rock back a little on your heels for balance when standing still. Super shoes have both a beveled heel and extra cushion in the heel that lets you rock back too far.
Because of my myriad injuries, I do balance drills almost every day. They are MUCH harder in high stack, soft cushioned, beveled heel shoes. Still, I often do my balance drills in a high stack, unstable shoe because it makes balancing more difficult. It's like standing on a Bosu ball.
FOR RUNNERS 65+: Carbon plate shoes can alleviate many running injuries. Beveled heeled shoes are superior not just for running but also moderate paced and fast walking.

Ahhh the ole fecund stream of consciousness...I believe the young lady will nod and graciously accept any gift...but will think you look down on her unless you go with carbon plated super shoes.

sorry about that. glad you're mostly feeling better!
