We like to have one thread per topic so we merged a 2nd thread that was started after this one into this one. The 2nd thread had the title of "Boston Mayor accidentally sends out invite for an "Electeds of color"-only holiday party to all Boston city councilors"
Conservatives should not be upset by this at all. This is merely POC doing what conservative whites have done for many centuries. Do conservatives no longer believe in the right to freely associate with who you choose?
Liberals are the ones that should be angry about this because their POC brethren are engaging in activities that run counter to their long-held notions of creating an equal and colorblind society.
Just imagine if they sent out a party invitation to everyone but blacks
Oh, like they did for 100s of years in America and probably still happens quite a bit in many circles? Yeah, hard to imagine
Two wrongs don't make a right. How do we ever move forward with that kind of thinking? Why shun and punish people today for things other people in the past have done?
It's really refreshing that at least in Boston an Asian American is considered to be a person of color. I thought Asian Americans were being discriminated against like the whites and Jews but I guess not any more. They now are a minority group worthy of being propped up.
This is discrimination. Whites alone get off onerous holiday party attendance duties.

First of all, if you think this is only in the past, you are kidding yourself with your privilege.
Secondly, the post was not asking about right or wrong. The original post questioned whether someone could “imagine this.” And I pointed out that imagining is not required because it happens all the time.

So, we should all just keep reinforcing division and hatred? No thank you. I'll pass on that.
Division just breeds more division and reinforces differences, which creates distrust and hatred .

This is the only smart comment on this thread. For a thorough analysis of this issue (the civil rights/freedom of association trade off), read Christopher Caldwell's "The Age of Entitlement."

The problem with that is that current "Progressives" don't want a color blind society. CRT preaches the exact opposite of a color blind society. I really wish we could go back to the goals you and the copied post are referring to .
Question for Dems - how do you know/decide who is white or colored? I am 1/4 Hispanic and 4% Jewish but I look white. At some point, whites need to start advocating for themselves just like any other race. Not saying they need to claim victim or minority status, but they shouldn't put up with being discriminated against in a way no other color would accept.
You're just upset because you don't get invited to white parties either.
Just imagine if they sent out a party invitation to everyone but blacks
If you can't understand why your comparison doesn't work, you definitely shouldn't go to the party.😆
Yes, specific spaces for women (without men), and people of color (without white people) can be very important.
Goodness, some people are very stupid.
Women's spaces are important which includes protected spaces from men who claim to be women. Men also can have protected spaces but that's different due to physical differences in strength between women and men
To counter your 2nd point, would you feel the same way if white people had safe spaces free from people of color? Or if non-blacks had safe spaces free from blacks?
First of all, if you think this is only in the past, you are kidding yourself with your privilege.

Correct. White-only events, spaces and organizations exist all across the country. These are maintained by both interpersonal and systemic racism.
Race thinking is violence and prejudice. We should work towards abolishing race and its fictions not affirming it. One understands the necessity of fighting racism and making amends far historical injury, but we cannot continue building a race society into the future!
