my select soccer team used to get crap for playing fairly defensive soccer. lot of aesthetes push pretty soccer for its own sake but we won 2 state titles. you can't beat what you can't score on. being difficult to score on then gave me the basis for college recruitment and being my college team's defensive MVP. to me you judge strategy by results. nearly all of the aesthetic complaints came from teams finishing below us in the standings every year.
pre won at the college level and set american records. to me this is the upside of reckless abandon. however at the olympics in the 5k he tried to take the lead last mile, couldn't hold it, fell to 4th.
at the college and normal pro level his ideas still worked. at the highest level, you might have a point. he might be like keni harrison that way. if it works, fast time. if not........people don't want to hear it because he's sanctified. however if you want to be a highly competitive athlete you need to be able to cold-blooded analyze the + and - of even the greats. you can't have sacred cows if you want to learn how to make the best hamburger yourself.
