Current power 5 D1 guy here, some things need to be cleared up:
These "scholarship" NIL deals are very sneaky and in a lot of cases take advantage of naive (through no fault of their own) high schoolers. Not only does their quasi quid pro quo nature violate NCAA rules, but they are essentially a handshake agreement. Unlike an actual NLI, nothing is signed by either party and the athlete does not receive "scholarship athlete" status. The latter should really be underlined in red because that status, even if just books, generally keeps an athlete from getting cut outside of extenuating circumstances such as a coaching change.
Sketchy coaches know most kids won't really read the fine print here, and just look at the big dollar signs. The fact is a lot of the kids being offered these deals are essentially on 1 year "trial runs". The coaches give out a ton of NIL money that does not count against the scholarship limit, and just cut whoever does not perform because all of these guys are legally just walk-ons. Furthermore, the money can just be taken away at any time for any reason, or just never even given in the first place.
Any parents or high school guys/gals reading this: Be very wary of these deals. NIL is awesome, but it should be a bonus. Always negotiate your worth in terms of a hard NLI scholarship, even if it seems like an insignificant amount. It's better to have the security of being a scholarship athlete, than money you may or may not receive depending on funding and your coaches personal character. There is no shame in being a walk on either, the standards are quite high especially on the men's side these days. Just know that your freshman year is very much a "trial run" and come into every race and practice with that mindset
