How will they ever recover from the (reported) $700,000 in damages from moving to 10 AM?! Gonna have to eat ramen pack noodles for a long time because of that time change
If I recall correctly, Flanagan finished third in the Trials and went on to place sixth at Rio.
There were only four athletes on the planet racing with super-shoes at the trials (and Rio) Shalane was one of them and there is absolutely no doubt in my mind she would never have finished forget podium without them, she was destroyed. That 4% (maybe 3% for prototypes) was everything and changed history.
Anyone attended an Olympic Trials Marathon before? Is it worth making the drive to watch in person?
I am going to swing by and check it out. I think I might bring my bike and spectate that way. A couple of the running youtubers like SJD did videos on the trials in Atlanta that give you a feel for what is it is like watching. It is something that would appeal to us distance runners. Nobody else would want to go watch it.

My wife & I enjoyed Atlanta in 2020, even though it was cold & so windy that full water bottles were blowing off the tables. We watched both starts (including Rupp sitting beforehand), then took the subway to a point on Peachtree where we saw the men & women going in both directions several times, then took the subway back to see the women finish. Half the fun was talking to the other spectators, most of whom were family members of 2:40-2:45 women. I assume that with tougher standards there will be fewer runners this time & so fewer spectators. For us it was definitely worth a 2-hour drive each way.
P.S. That said, having done it once, I doubt we'll drive 6 hours each way to Orlando this time. Looking forward to seeing World XC in Tallahassee in a couple of years, though.
Not trying to be negative but there is no chance whoever makes the team finishes in the top 15 at the Olympics. We are not competitive in the marathon now that Galen is past his peak
We had both a male and female in the top 15 in Budapest with 3 Ethiopians and 3 Kenyans all six were sub 2:05 prior to Budapest and everyone sent their best. You obviously don’t follow the sport. 38 men entered sub 2:07 but still had a male finish 13th. A US woman finished 9th in an equally loaded field.
If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it, does it make a sound?
With 500+ television channels today, the only people who are going to sit and watch a bunch of skinny people run through the streets of Orlando for two hours are the most diehard running fans. 100x as many people will watch the next ridiculous Matt Choi video than will watch the Marathon Trials.
Then don't watch. The move is for the athletes, not you.

men probably but there are some great championship racers on the women’s side. with countries limited to 3 athletes I don’t think a top 10 finish is out of the question.

I was in Central Park for the Trials in 2007. Running back and forth across the park with hundreds of people is still one of my favorite athletic memories. What's funny to think about is that we didn't have smart phones back then, so we were all huddled around a guy who had a laptop and a modem card that was slowly picking up splits. Man, times have changed!

This is what makes it so sad, the only way Americans can get a result in a marathon is by handicapping the East Africans. Might as well just say it out loud that we need to give all Americans a 5 minute head start in a marathon whenever a East African is competing.
Here's a sampling of the typical weather in Orlando around February 3rd last year (2023)
Note the EIGHTY-FOUR PERCENT humidity
Oh and the 11mph wind.
Not sure if people should hope for overcast so less direct sun but that means also the heat and humidity actually builds since the water vapor cannot evaporate as quickly.
Great city selection Max-Kickback Siegel, should make the fails of LA 2016 pale in comparison.
Marathon running is the only outdoor sporting event with so many pansies that feel that they must have the most ideal weather conditions. Triathlon, Ultra and even shorter distance Track and field don't whine like this. But it is not international. It seems to only be in the US where there are so many snowflakes.
It's wintertime! Jayzuz. "Direct sun" isn't a thing. I've never heard such whining--Holy crap. Maybe everyone should just phone in the time they feel like they identify with. Or they could make it shorter so nobody gets uncomfortable. O.M.G!!!
