The Marathon Olympic Trials is a huge cash cow for USATF. It is always a huge loss for every LOC. There is no way that USATF is going to allow any marathon that doesn’t pony up a million dollars to select the team. This is also why the will never utilize a time list.
This is really the big takeaway from this article. Go Sports is involved in this one to try to make an event that is usually a net money loser into and even that turns a profit for the LOC. That is what is behind the 12 pm start time. So, it is now clear that the choice is between using the trials to make profit for private entities at the expense of the athletes or have the trials go to places where the LOC is willing to just try and break even or even take a loss to host an event that puts the athletes first.
Also, not having a signed contract at this point is borderline malpractice on the part of USATF. It does not mean that Go Sports can walk away from the event without facing any legal repercussions. There are equitable remedies available if Go Sports tries to walk away. And the world of major sports event organizing is a very small world. Go Sports will not want to be known as the organizing company that cannot be trusted with a major event. So, they will more than likely just bite the bullet and put on the trials and then sue USATF for any loss.
And I will say it once again. Make Houston the permanent site for the marathon trials. A long term deal would help the LOC develop better sponsorship relationships and get more efficient at contracting vendors/managing expenses. It would also save USATF lots of time and money dealing with a search committee, negotiating a deal with the LOC and making sure the LOC gets the event done. With Houston, USATF can just set it and forget it.
