(3) I'm not a sub-elite or VIP, so I took the train to the ferry to the bus to the Fort. I thought this was done as well as it could have been. I got everywhere I wanted to be early but was prepared. I was in Wave 2/A, so I got to hear the elites and WC go, which was nice. Bathrooms, coffee, etc., in ample supply. But if there was bad weather this would have been not as nice.
The start was amazing well planned and provided one of the best backdrops for starting a run I've seen in a minute. The crowds throughout were great but I got hit with a confetti popper (it was for a runner in front of me) but it scared the hell out of me. NYRR told people no to these, but people don't care. The water/Gatorade tables were excellent. I didn't have to do too much bobbing and weaving to get to a cup and it was available early and often. I thought the areas such as South Williamsburg, the Pulaski Bridge, the Ed Koch Bridge and the Willis Avenue Bridge should stay as spectator free as they were--it was nice to be able to gather one's self if only for a 1/2 mile or so. I finished around 1PM so NYRR had already put out a couple hoses spraying runners on the course over the last few miles--which was very nice.
The medical staff post-finish were everywhere and very helpful to those in need.
(4) Placement of runners. Entice the slower/injured.disabled runners to move back. I was passing people the entire time, which sounds nice, but as someone else said, it got very narrow on Lafayette, in Williamsburg and throughout Central Park. I bumped a lot of people all day and towards the end when I was catching the Wave 1 runners it could have gotten dangerous.
Crowd Control. Along 5th avenue near 119th Street I was running into the post-church crowd coming from Bethel Gospel Assembly--which is a mega church with tons of tourists every week. There was no police presence and I just about ended a 15 year old boy's life by slamming into him.
SIS Gels. I had a tropical fruit, mabe tutti fruity one. It was so big and liquidy and gross. Take less money and get a better gel sponsor please.
Finishing. I'd actually like a tighter finish, because it didn't feel much like finishing a race. And of course walking from 66th street way up to (I can't remember) and then back down to 69th street seemed cruel.
Finally, the most difficult thing of all this was writing on Letsrun.com. This page is using 2GB of memory and I have to close ads to keep typing.
