I checked into this and it turns out you are right, for some devices, but they say specifically that it doesn't work 100% of the time. And perhaps more importantly, you have to be connected to a bluetooth network via Garmin Connect for it to work, or you need their high end Forerunner 945 LTE with cellular connectivity enabled. They also offer another a more general feature called Assistance, which differs in that it must be triggered manually rather than The Garmin devices it works on are "Forerunner 45, 55, 245, 255, 645, 745, 945, 955 series". It also works on a number of other brand devices, reportedly, as noted in the article linked below.
They call it "Incident Detection" and it must be turned on in order to work.
I will add that Garmin makes a separate device that we bought that's like an old pager that connects independently to satellites and is for emergency called a satellite communicator. We use it whenever a family member goes on remote hikes. It's not cheap and requires a monthly subscription, but is about the best thing you can have for backcountry emergencies.
