Anytime a runner brags about a "monster workout", that means they overcooked it and are going to be flat for the race. This rule holds true for all runners, from hobbyjoggers to elite. So I expect a poor performance. He'll hang in there for 30k or so and then fall apart.

It's a good thing then that a) he didn't brag about it b) it's not a monster workout given his fitness

I don't think Levins said it was a monster workout - others did. While it is a strong workout, Ingebrigtsen was doing 10 reps at same pace and recovery, then doing another session later that day, or it was the 2nd session of the day.
Cam is in a good rhythm with consistency. He's had two solo HM in 61s. His Tokyo last spring proved he can rally late and run fast at 2:05.
It's great to see him find his niche again in training and respond. He's captivated us as that runner who ("Cam MF Levins!") has been able to respond to high mileage. The Utah days with flotrack where he's running his third run of day made us all fans!!
His 2:05 PB and him running NYC made me think, has anyone come close to Geoffrey Mutai's 2:05? This NYC course has always been an Equalizer and it's suited for Cam to be in the mix. The hills late and dependant weather always makes for the dramatics at 2:08 But never this video game like 2hrs this recent fall has brought us.
Lol, are people really bringing up Jakob and Kelvin in a thread about Cam? Jakob ran 7:54!!! for two miles, and Kelvin very nearly broke 2 in the marathon!!! What both can do as reasonable workouts have nothing to do with what's appropriate for Cam.
How'd Hobbs and Holt end up at USAs after people on here were talking them up after big workouts? Never fails to amuse when people see big workouts, and then come on here talking up a runners prospects. To me, those workouts a sign of weakness, not strength. You don't win a marathon (or any race) with one big workout, but you can sure ruin it.
one of the good effects of high mileage is quicker recovery. after doing summer of 140 per week, I was able to do 800's on about 35 sec rest...So this workout is not a world shocker.
It's reaching calling this a bonkers workout. The headline is a bit rich, TBH.
10 x 1K @ 10K race pace off 90" is very standard. This is a bit tougher, but a one-off in prep for a big day.
Not worth the headline.
But worth training discussion for knowledge and informing people about appropriate workouts who may not know.
Exactly. I think this a case of a largely joggers magazine getting excited. This is certainly not a workout that would stress Cam much, if at all. Just a solid pace workout for a 2:05 marathoner (and low 27 10k guy).
is one minute a normal recovery time for a 1k workout?
No . yes . This is a pretty normal threshold workout . We used to do 15 x 1k with 1 min rest , that was 20 years ago. This is hardly new, hardly bonkers
this happens before every major marathon. some non african boasts of "best shape ever" and "unbelievable workouts" only to completely underwhelm in the race.
Wouldn't say this because he basically just ran my 1k PR on a loop for 12x1k @ T on short rest but it just looks like a really solid marathon workout for someone at his level. He probably does something like this weekly. Kipchoge does this session at altitude. Makes sense that Levins is hitting the same splits at sea level. He's fit. The volume looks good but he doesn't look to be overdoing it. Rooting for him in NYC.

Take it easy, boomers. This is 13:45 pace for 5k- not even 10k race pace. The world has moved on from the 13:20 that used to win championship era that you’re used to.
Sure, the rest of the world has moved on, but the current generation of Americans sure hasn't.

Just to reiterate what someone else already pointed out... the article didn't even interview Levins. They just looked at his Strava and wrote an article about his workout. Levins didn't say it was a monster workout. He didn't say he's in the shape of his life. He didn't say anything. If the headline had been "Levins Cruises Relaxed Workout Before New York," no one would have blinked. 2:45/km is certainly moving, but shouldn't be too stressful for a runner at his level.
