Better would be to use Rate of Perceived Exertion and then add the element of duration to make a combined suffer score. That would favor long distance events, as well as back of the pack runners. Yes the front runners are more likely to try to stay in it and push themselves harder but that may be offset by adrenaline. Besides it sucks knowing you already got your ass kicked yet you still need to run miles to the finish.
Still working on how to include accidently sh!tting your pants into this model and if it should instantly count as the most painful experience.
