After listening to her post-race interview it’s clear he has not been good for her mental game. She talked about all the stress she had from people talking about why she may not run worlds - totally unavoidable with most coaches
I tried to keep an open mind about this but today was the last straw. She needs to get out of that training group now. The first mistake he made was taking her out of the 400. She loved running that in college and I think this demoralized her.
I agree. He's keeping her out of the 400 not for her own interest, but SML's. And he's even more out of his league coaching 1500 than 800. Mu is a 400/800 runner. That is where she should be competing. And she should train with someone that can coach the 800. Her 3 fastest 800's were 2 years ago when she was 19.
Can we please reinstate Alberto Salazar to coach Mu? If Mu is the type to do drugs, she's already doing them under Kersee. If she isn't, she won't do them under Salazar. The point about Salazar is that he is a guy who covered every single detail like a mad scientist. With Salazar, Mu would be running 1:51 and 3:48. And she'd be racing more often, but always in the exact right distance at the exact right time.
Myself, I have serious doubts about his brilliance as a coach. He made his reputation in the 1980's during the heavy drug/steroid era and he was highly suspect. Now he is showing some success but doing it by recruiting outstanding talent who do NOT seem to be improving under his guiding hand. I think his greatest talent is as a salesman and a self promoter but as a coach? Not so much maybe.
Absolutely incredible people can say this a year after Syd ran 50.68, quite possibly one of the strongest records in the books right now.

Lolz, indeed he was like an obsessive mad scientist...

Memory of a goldfish man.
I think he did help Sydney improve, especially with hurdling technique. But we are also talking about someone who was the youngest person to make a US Olympic track team since 1980, so it is hard to parse through how much is attributable to her underlying talent simply maturing physically.
It is quite possible he is a very good hurdle coach but not a good 800 coach, and I do think he is conflicted as it regards putting one of his athletes interests over another. What Athing races should have nothing to do with what Sydney races.
I am generally annoyed with the idea of holding athletes out of competition for long term development. Mu is one of the top athletes in the 800m now. She is young and can continue to improve but nothing in this sport (or life) is guaranteed. She needs to train and compete while she can because anything can happen - ask Donovan Brazier. The most specific form of training is racing itself and avoiding competition feeds any anxiety she already has. Kersee is bad fit.
”Bailey said she found it impossible to keep up with Kersee's stiff training without steroids. Kersee's athletes trained hard every day, and Bailey was used to periods of recuperation between hard workouts. Steroids allow athletes to recover more quickly between training sessions.
'He didn't know how to coach me because I was drug-free,' said Bailey, who left UCLA after six months. 'And I didn't improve.'”
Sydney and Mu need to stop publicly calling this man a genius, and run far away from him as fast as possible.

Generational talent or not, Kersee coached athletes own 4 world records out of the 22 standard events in track. No other coach gets anywhere close. Glenn Mills has 3 if you count the 4x100 record (2 members of it were coached by him).
That alone should secure his place as coach, not just a "salesman".

When she was asked did she know Bobby Kersee was going to say what he said to the LA times about her maybe not racing and she waffled about how "Bobby and I are a team and it doesn't matter who said what to who at what time" I take that to say he 100% said that without talking to her. If she had given him the greenlight she'd have just said "100% we went over that together and he spoke on my behalf."
I know very little about Kersee’s coaching style, so no comment on that. It simply looks like he is working with some very talented athletes who are honestly burnt out and tired after starting competing on an international level as teens and racing a lot…until this year.

This is awful and he just keeps throwing her under the bus like this. Remember when he didn’t even tell her that she was entered in some meet in Nashville earlier this year? He says all this stuff to get media attention for himself and then leaves her to take all the criticism.
