What was UCLA’s mindset here? Did they think the team would stay together after firing the assistant coach so close to the season starting? Or do they just not care about the distance running part of the team?
UCLA will be fine. They will terrible during their final PAC-12 season. Once they enter the B1G, they will have the advantage of recruiting at home and from across the Midwest. Hire the right coach with good connections, then start poaching kids that would have settled for Nebraska, Indiana, or Illinois.

It has been years if not decades since they were really good or even solid. Without a significant hire (unlikely IMO) they will struggle to rebound from this for quite a while.
I’m surprised the Aussie 800m gal pitman hasn’t gone on the portal, but then again she wasn’t a Brosnan recruit, she got better under his guidance though
She's all about the 'student', less about the 'athlete' experience. She's class, would be 1:57 if it was her focus.
UCLA had so many chances to keep the athletes that left but the AD schemed to force them to stay thinking there’s no way they would leave this late. Truly a deviant plan. With no coach, Barnett called their bluff and said I’ll go somewhere even if I have to redshirt. UCLA massive fail. You mess with people like that you pay a big price. They want Brosnan out in June.
Now you all understand how amazing of a coach Sean Brosnan is… UCLA can’t hold a single recruit, they offer nothing.
I think most coaches could offer scholarships you don't have and get fired and lose all the athletes.
I suspect Brosnan was anticipating that UCLA’s joining the Big Ten there would be money in the budget for scholarships. He had no other cards to play to creat a successful program.

Why would moving to the big 10 mean more scholarships? UCLA is already a fully funded program; they just choose to use them for sprints, throws, jumps, hurdles & multis.

You don't get extra scholarships for a move to another conference. UCLA is fully funded.
Just follow the rules like you are supposed to in order to create a successful program.

Well that would make him one of the dumbest people of all time.
If he indeed tampered in the portal and then offered money that he didn't actually have alloted then year pretty easy to see why he got fired.
Did he not understand what college coaching was and the limitations of it before he took the job? In part why you don't hire high school coaches to big time positions (although I assume most wouldn't be that insanely stupid)
