There is only one way Jakob doesn’t win this (and remember he is going to be very motivated after not winning Eugene) and that is if at least 2 of the other main contenders disrupt the rhythm of the race from 800m onwards. There has to be a body in front of him coming round that final bend the penultimate time (as they approach 1000m) or else there is simply no way he will be beaten.
Someone has to make him dramatically accelerate and accelerate in a short space of time (his one weakness) in order to hurt him enough for him to be compromised. Some people might point to Eugene and how Wightmann was able to beat him but this seasons Jakob is just not taking that 3rd lap to 1200m anywhere near as casual as he did last year. Disrupt rhythm, get bodies in front of him and force him to accelerate/move around - but hey, easier said than done.
Why this won’t happen? Never does. This formula was the same one to beat a threshold monster like Farah and when it mattered nobody had the guts to do it. What happens is that it’s just a game of finger-crossing hoping that he has a bad enough day or just messes up tactics. Even when El G lost to Ngeny it wasn’t really because Ngeny or the field did anything of note to beat him, it was because Hicham just had an oddly bad day when it mattered the most and Ngeny was good enough to just edge him. I just can’t see that happening and Ngeny was also a level of talent above anyone else up against Jakob this year anyway.
