I never get why these third world countries consistently give their rish sports heroes big gifts. Yes, Faith Kipyegon is a national treasure. But she's also loaded by Kenyan standards. So why is the Kenyan govt buying her a 3-bedroom house and giving her 35k?
ARe they directly trying to remind the citizens that the best way to get rich is to be in the good graces of the govt? I just don't get it.
PS. I also don't get why in the US we give rich-ass billionaires hundreds of millions of dollars. Trruth be told, that bothers me more but I get why the politicians due that. They can keep a team in a city and get lots of votes as a result.. And we don't give it directly to them, we normally do it in terms of a stadium subsidy. Here in Maryland, the Os and Ravens are each getting $600 million which is crazy to me.
When’s the last time you’ve volunteered to help the poor in the Baltimore area? Lemme guess: never
Governments and organisations provide significant rewards or gifts to successful athletes, even those who are already financially well-off makes sense. Let's look at a few examples of where and how this has taken place:
National Pride and Symbolism: Example: In 2008, the Indian government awarded a 125-square-meter plot of land in the city of Gurgaon to Abhinav Bindra, India's first individual gold medalist in the Olympics. The land was a gesture of recognition and honor for his achievement in the 10m air rifle event at the Beijing Olympics. Incentives for Future Success: Example: The Singapore National Olympic Council's Multi-Million Dollar Awards Programme offers substantial cash rewards to athletes who win medals at major international competitions like the Olympics and Paralympics. This serves as an incentive for athletes to aim for success and bring glory to their nation. Promotion of Sports and Healthy Lifestyles: Example: The Chinese government has launched initiatives to promote sports and healthy living among its citizens. As part of these efforts, they have provided subsidies and rewards to successful athletes, including cash incentives and even apartments in recognition of their achievements. Political and Public Relations: Example: In 2012, the Russian government awarded luxury apartments to each member of the national synchronized swimming team after they won gold at the London Olympics. This was seen as a gesture of pride and celebration of their success on the international stage. Cultural Norms and Expectations: Example: In various African countries, including Kenya, Ethiopia, and Uganda, successful long-distance runners have been celebrated as national heroes. Governments or private sponsors have provided financial rewards, homes, and other gifts to these athletes, reflecting cultural norms that place a high value on their achievements. Don't forget the houses that Aouita and El Guerrrouj received from the King of Morocco. Redistribution of Wealth and Resources: Example: The Cuban government has historically provided significant rewards to successful athletes as part of a broader policy of redistributing resources and promoting national pride. Athletes who win gold medals at international competitions, such as the Olympics, are often rewarded with cash, cars, and homes.
It's like if a very rich Celebrity wants to stay in a Hotel, lots of Hotels will try to get the Celebrity by letting them stay free. The Rich and/or Famous do not pay for things regular people have to, people who do not need it get things, those who do need it rarely get it
Like when Trump went to a small Cuban restaurant after his arraignment and offered to pay for everyone and then just left without paying, he fully expected the restaurant to foot he bill for him and anyone one he wanted.

Your sounding more progressive every day. That’s what we need a real shake up to the establishment—-more politicians like Bernie Sanders
I don't care what these countries do, esp as an American where basketball players and NFL stars get 50 million a year to play their sport. Any American who has a problem with Faith getting paid are full of s**t!

Unless you're an American who has the same issues with NFL NBA players making obscene money..like me. F Kipyegon is at their financial level in Kenya.
Rojo, I appreciate the hard work you've put in to build this site. I visit it 3-4 times per day, have never paid a dime, and the ads are not intrusive, so thank you. With that said, you and your brother have always bothered me. I've rarely posted over the last 20 years, and never concerning my dislike of you and your brother, but I can say that I think both of you are angry twats. I remember guys like you on my high school teams; very talented, very smart, moderately attractive, upper middle class, insecure white kids, that are just angry at the world and spew their pithy opinions as if they were peer-reviewed, and time-tested. You have no idea what you're talking about concerning Kenyan politics or the sports franchises in your city. You know about the stuff going on in your house, maybe a couple other houses, and how to run a great, internationally beloved running website....stick to what you know, tell your brother to do the same, and if you are going to mention something outside of your wheel house, at least show some humility and mention the possibility that just maybe the people making these decisions are more intelligent than you.
This post should have read in its entirety..."Kenyan government gifts FK $35k and a 3 bedroom house."....Is it boring, yeah, but it's the only thing you know to be true.
It’s not about the rich. It’s rewarding extreme excellence that brought pride to the nation. A 3br house and 35k is not affecting in any way the budget or other issues.
Rojo you’re the child of privilege so you can relate I’m sure. At least Faith did something to earn her position. Unlike being born on third base yet lack any awareness whatsoever.
Also how did you graduate from Princeton with your basic level knowledge of statistics and grade school spelling errors?

He actually believes that? It's the intellectual equivalent of thinking the shot would travel further in the air if kicked.
Who knew that huge urban cities report their votes during the wee hours and can require days to finalize? Jeez, never seen that before.
Regardless, there are numerous benefits of rewarding elite athletes. There's a prominent article on the swimming site today of an Australian billionaire who provides generous incentive bonuses to Australian swimmers and also to other sports. One of the top swimmers is quoted as saying that without her generosity the swimmers would be retiring much earlier.
Not all Africans are poor. Africa is actually the richest country in the world but all of its gold, diamonds, oil and other commodities are being stolen as we speak. 35k and a house is nothing! She set records, won championships equivalent to MJ. She deserves more
